suggestion for DNS servers to avoid DU trouble, in the future
The suggested IP addresses of the DNS servers are: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 for OpenDNS

and...

8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 for Google Public DNS

Configuration directions depend on your operating system, of course. I have a router, so I configure it.

Configuration instructions for XP are here.

Configuration instructions for Vista are here.

Google also has good overall instructions for Ubuntu, Mac OS, and Windows 7 here.

By using the OpenDNS DNS servers and one of the Google Public DNS servers, I've had no trouble all day. FWIW.

1. OK, now my brain is strained.
You might as well have typed that in Martian, for all of the sense I can make of it.

I will never catch on to this stuff.

3. dig@8.8.8.8 democraticunderground.com
....Google still doesn't have an entry for DU. May want to hold off on that one. I do see that the ever-popular 4.2.2.2 does have an entry.

9. further explanation
Based on the OP, and on some responses, one or both Google DNS resolvers is working for democraticunderground.com. But they're not working for me. This is likely due to something called Anycast, which sends you to the "nearest" server for DNS resolution. So if I point to 8.8.8.8 for DNS, I'm getting to a different physical machine than someone in Miami would be getting to when they point to 8.8.8.8.

In plain English: I think Google is getting the "fix" in place, but it has not propagated to all corners of the Google universe yet.

4.2.2.2 is another public DNS server to try for anyone able to see this and not resolving correctly with the Google nameservers.

For the DNS-minded, here's the output of a dig. Note the Answer:0 portion.

C:\Windows\system32>dig @8.8.8.8 democraticunderground.com

7. What happened?
I couldn't load DU all day and I just put the Google DNS servers in place of the ones my ISP supplies to get on the site.

13. Thanks for this
I have been meaning to find an open DNS server and your post and not being able to access DU led me to do two things:

1. find a proxy server and accessing DU - and, thus, learn about using a proxy to get to various places online.

2. sign up for a free DNS server and adding its addresses to my list of options to have access to the internet.

Both of these "learning experiences" are useful - esp. if our service providers want to limit our access to the internet or particular sites for one reason or another.

All in all, this has been a useful teaching experience for a lot of us about how to work around glitches.

so again... thanks!

Edited on Tue Mar-01-11 10:23 AM by Lisa0825
Is this something that would not work when I am on my company's network? I do have admin rights on my computer. I just don't want to mess up something and end up having to call the help desk! LOL
