3M CEO slams Obama as 'anti-business'

by Ken Sweet, contributing writerFebruary 28, 2011: 1:41 PM ET

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- The head of industrial conglomerate 3M (MMM, Fortune 500) blasted the president as being "anti-business," claiming Obama has not done anything to improve the White House's relationship with Corporate America.

- snip -

"We know what his instincts are ... he is anti business," Buckley said in an interview that ran late Sunday. The interview comes as the White House pushes its pro-business agenda. Last week, the Council on Jobs and Competitiveness held its first meeting to brainstorm ideas on job growth and boosting the economy.

- snip -

Buckley said his company, which makes thousands of products ranging from Post-It notes to Scotch Tape, "will do business where it's good and friendly."

Despite the recent public positions of other major business leaders, Buckley says he's not alone. "There is a sense among companies that (the U.S.) is a difficult place to do business," he told the FT. "We've got a real choice between manufacturing in Canada or Mexico -- which tend to be more pro-business -- and America."

Hey, Buckley... How about helping out AMERICA, you overpaid* shit?

Since they're going to be like this NO MATTER WHAT, can we tax them 'til their dicks fall off now, PLEASE???

* Wikipedia: While CEO of 3M in 2008, George Buckley earned a total compensation of $12,182,410; which included a base salary of $1,720,000; a cash bonus of $2,844,074; stocks granted of $4,002,421; options granted of $3,363,492; and other compensation of $252,423. In 2009, George Buckley earned a total compensation of $13,992,628, which included a base salary of $1,720,000, a cash bonus of $3,859,112, stocks granted worth $4,333,655, options granted of $3,757,572, and other compensation of $322,289.

1. I copied this quote from DU. It was appropriate now as it was then.
Republicans want:

No Social Security
No Public Education
No Regulated Banking
No Medicare
No Healthcare
No Regulations for Wall Street
No Regulations for Insurance
No Tax to the Rich who make wealth by plunder of the poor
No Regulation of private business, all free trade

Republican want:
All Plunder, Extortion, Scam, Feudalism, Anarchy and Capitalism for Crooks and Criminals.

This was possible in 1850, not any more in 2010.

I want to thank the person who first posted it. It means more and more each day.

35. Not just corporations
but private equity firms too. They buy American comapnies that have established a reputation of quality. Then, they ship manufacturing to China, make the decision to reduce quality and then rake in the cash.
One I am thinking of owns 100 such companies.

75. You mean an example?
The worst example of all is the Simmons Mattress Co. that was bought by private equity firms twice. They looted the company of its cash and leveraged the rest. They ruined the company and filed bankruptcy.

Craftsman tools is another example. They had quality products that were dependable. The company was bought by a private equity firm and sent the manufacturing overseas.

People think that when a product is made in China and it is of lesser quality that it is the fault of Chinese companies. The American businesses knowingly agree to lesser quality to make more money. They are NOT insisting the products meet their previous standards.

Look up Private Equity Firms - Lists in Wiki. Take a look at the companies that are owned by PE firms. You would be surprised. Sorry but due to computer issues I can't import the sites for you.

Some PE firms specialize in manufacturing. They buy the company, fire American workers, transfer administrative functions to their structure, and move manufacturing to China. The previous company exists only on paper. Private equity firms are really financial instruments.

22. NAFTA and GATT are PROOF that the citizens of this country have no say.
If there was a poll taken, I assure you that a HUGE majority of Americans would say we should get the hell out of those two agreements. We've been so royally screwed by them ever since they went into effect.

I would venture to guess that a HUGE majority of Americans would also say that any company that sends jobs overseas should NOT have ANY tax breaks here in America. In fact, THAT was really what Obama ran on, and won with stunning majorities.

Democracy? A country run by majority rule? Pfft.

Ask any American what GATT and NAFTA are all about and they'll look at you as some kind of nutjob. Ask them about the Chinese crap they buy from Walmart and they'll tell you about how much money their saving. Ask them about the latest travails of Charlie Sheen and they'll spend an hour or so giving their opinion. Apparently you don't seem to realize we live in the dumbest country on the planet.

It's the biggest pile a crap and lies. In Wisconsin, most of the big corporations hid behind subsidiaries, not paying their fair share of taxes, complaining about regulation, workers' comp laws, workers' right, taxes (they didn't pay) just to squeeze the taxpayers and home owners until they can't hardly give anymore.

When does it end?

19. See, I just don't understand what they CEOs and governors are dealing with don't ya know?
I should just trust them when they say this shit. They get paid the big bucks to know this stuff (not to conspire, uh unh):

"On to Page Three of Governor Walker’s Budget Bill, third paragraph from the top, there is very interesting language that leads to the very important question for Governor Walker. The paragraph mandates that a study of the existing Wisconsin Retirement System be performed and it must “specifically address establishing a defined contribution plan as an option for WRS participating employees” and the deadline for completing this study is June 30, 2012. I don’t think that Walker would be adding retirement benefits for workers - so I am wondering if the Republican Governors that are trying to get rid of collective bargaining of retirement benefits, so that they can terminate the existing plans and recover excess assets for their state balance sheets.

If Governor Walker’s bill passes, and collective bargaining of retirement benefits is eliminated, then next year Governor Walker can decide it is in Wisconsin’s best interests to get rid of the existing plan and replace it with something less valuable for the employees. And the employees would have no say and no one can keep Walker from raiding your retirement savings.

Again, hard-working Americans are getting the short end of the stick."

70. Very interesting thought about the retirement funds in Wisconsin.
Many a company has been purchased simply because it had surplus retirement funds.

This makes more sense than anything else I have heard about Walker's motivations in Wisconsin. But of course that depends on whether the retirement funds really have a surplus.

It is inherently unequal by definition, rewards only greed and malfeasance, and yet we cling and refer to it as an "american dream". For 99% of the country, if we're honest, it's more of a nightmare.

Because you can't spell "Competitive" without an "I" and a "ME".

Obama couldn't be any more business friendly if his name was George W Bush. Maybe this will finally make him see that pleasing shitbags like George Buckley really isn't worth it in the long run. They'll still call you a commie or worse no matter HOW much you do for them.

There is ample proof contained within the Trade and Tax policies in countries that have a robust manufacturing sector as to why this is AMERICA'S EPIC FAIL

When manufacturers can threaten the Pres. of the United States with moving their manufacturing facilities off shore while reaping the rewards of doing business within the borders of the United States, the largest consumer nation on the planet, we have some major policy issues

Imagine if the admin and all its advisory boards hadn't been stacked to the gills with these pro corporate Wall Street types and their pals, despite who and what they were and had been for years. Imagine, instead, if there had been real investigations into fraud and abuse of the plunderers of the last 10+ years and imagine if some real bastards were in jail by now and they knew we were coming for more of them. Imagine that we stopped rewarding them and their families by pondering ways to make the elderly work even longer to support them and their offspring and their tax cuts while facing prospects of diminishing vital safety net programs. Imagine if we dried up the rivers of milk and honey for the fattest war profiteers among them and they had to try find another way to bleed us all dry. They can't and don't imagine any of that, and for good reason. We can expect the arrogance and plundering to continue.

Painting Obama as anti-business no matter how pro-business he is has no downside for them. Making Obama into Castro means the envelope on the right keeps on expanding which means more resources for the Robber Barron types.

those countries have.

Or he thinks the tax structure in Canada that provides for university and healthcare is just fine.

Seems to me, he's a dumb ass that really just wants to kill our country.

61. A group effort here, with Jack Welch reporting in...
Obama Move to the Center is All Talk So Far: Welch

President Obama's attempts to move to the political center have been more cosmetic than concrete, author and former General Electric CEO Jack Welch told CNBC.

Speaking as the president tries to find common ground with the new Republican-led House of Representatives, Welch said the supposed shift from the president's liberal base hasn't amounted to much as far as policy is concerned.

"The tack to the center is verbal, it's not actionable," he said.

As an example, he cited Obama's move last month that permitted employees of the Transportation Security Administration to unionize. The directive has come under criticism as further evidence of the president's anti-business position and a further placation of organized labor.

"Let's hope he's moving to the center," Welch said. "But from what I see-unionizing 43,000 TSA workers on a Friday and giving a speech (to the US Chamber of Commerce) Monday morning-show me the money."

65. "He is anti-business" is used just like "The liberal media"; repeat a lie often enough
and the people accept your lie, which gives you permission to move the media to the extreme Right and gives Obama permission to work ONLY for business while doing fuck all for the poor and working classes.

80. Study: 2/3s of U.S. Corporations Pay No Taxes
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/08/12/national/main4342535.shtml

WASHINGTON, Aug. 12, 2008
Most Companies Pay No Federal Income Tax

GAO Study Also Finds 68% Of Foreign Companies In U.S. Avoid Corporate Taxes

(AP) Two-thirds of U.S. corporations paid no federal income taxes between 1998 and 2005, according to a new report from Congress.

The study by the Government Accountability Office, expected to be released Tuesday, said about 68 percent of foreign companies doing business in the U.S. avoided corporate taxes over the same period.

Collectively, the companies reported trillions of dollars in sales, according to GAO's estimate.

"It's shameful that so many corporations make big profits and pay nothing to support our country," said Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., who asked for the GAO study with Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich.
