Fighter jets and helicopter gunships and naval assets, OH MY! Neocons salivate over Libya...

Neocons Want More Blood

By Jason Sigger

Following up on Heather's post about McCain and Lieberman's desire for action against Libya, the neocons are starting to chant for more action. In an amazing show of bravado, a group of forty political analysts, including more than a dozen former officials of former President GW Bush, have posted a letter in the Foreign Policy Initiative website calling for President Obama to bring some "American exceptionalism" in the form of gunboat diplomacy to Libya. It really is amazingly idiotic drivel for such Very Serious People to voice.

Therefore, we recommend the United States, in conjunction with NATO allies, take the following specific actions immediately:

1) The United States should call upon NATO to develop operational plans to urgently:

* Establish a presence in Libyan airspace to prevent the continued use of fighter jets and helicopter gunships against civilians and carry out other missions as required.
* Move naval assets into Libyan waters to aid in evacuation efforts and prepare for possible contingencies. Establish the capability to disable Libyan naval vessels used to attack civilians.

1. Dubya would have already gotten 1000 of our troops killed.
I'm so glad we have an adult in the White House now.

2. You want a 'no-fly' zone? You got it...USS Enterprise CVN-65 headed to Libya
Hillary Clinton warns of 'drawn-out civil war' in Libya as U.S. sends in its warships

Pentagon spokesman Colonel Dave Lapan said the military was 'repositioning' forces to be ready to assist in case a no-fly zone was enforced.

But today General James Mattis, commander of U.S. Central Command, told a Senate hearing that imposing one would be 'challenging' - and that it would be a military operation.

'You would have to remove air defense capability in order to establish a no-fly zone, so no illusions here,' he said. 'It would be a military operation - it wouldn't be just telling people not to fly airplanes.'

6. Of course, the neo-cons are drooling over Libya
they've always liked the idea of blowing people up, esp. people that are "over there". For them, there's always money for bombs and bullets, never any money for books and bread.

7. What's another billion dollars a day to run a naval operation when we're saving British Petroleum
You've seen one oil war, you've seen them all. You know the drill.

Too bad the Darfur region of the Sudan doesn't have oil production or we could save them too.

8. more - US warship headed to Libya
WASHINGTON — A US warship with hundreds of Marines on board headed towards Libya on Tuesday, defense officials said, as US and European allies sought to pile pressure on embattled leader Moamer Khadafi.

The USS Kearsarge, an amphibious assault ship accompanied by two other naval vessels, was expected to pass through the Suez Canal soon from the Red Sea, two officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told AFP.

"There are sailors on ships heading that way, it's real."

An American aircraft carrier, the USS Enterprise -- which has fighter jets that could enforce a possible no-fly zone -- could also be called upon for the Libya crisis. The carrier is currently in the north of the Red Sea, according to the US Navy's website.
