3. Libyan rebels celebrate win in battle near Tripoli
Libyan rebels celebrate success in key city
Pro-Gadhafi forces battled rebels for six hours but could not retake control of Zawiya. Refugees flee

By MAGGIE MICHAEL, Associated Press Maggie Michael, Associated Press – 1 hr 42 mins ago
TRIPOLI, Libya – Residents of the rebel-held city closest to Libya's capital passed out sweets and cold drinks to fighters Tuesday and celebrated with a victory march after they managed to repel an overnight attack by forces loyal to longtime leader Moammar Gadhafi.

Pro-Gadhafi forces also were repelled as they tried to retake two other opposition-held cities: Misrata, Libya's third-largest city 125 miles (200 kilometers) east of Tripoli, and Zintan, 75 miles (120 kilometers) south of the Libyan capital.

The rebels have been fighting to consolidate their gains as the international community weighs new moves to isolate the longtime Libyan leader, including the possibility of creating a no-fly zone over Libya.

Witnesses in Zawiya said pro-Gadhafi forces battled rebels for six hours overnight but could not retake control of the city 30 miles (50 kilometers) west of Tripoli. They said the last of several assaults by the Gadhafi loyalists came at around 3 a.m. local time.

So -- even if I took for granted that the US wasn't acting in any way in their

own interests -- I think Gaddafi will refuse to be "exiled" -- unless he gets

new guarantees of his future safety.

Think America would have figured that out, as well???

The Libyan people want to do this themselves --

I'd just like some forces to keep the battle from going to Gaddafi bombing cities,

for instance -- they need air cover.

US has to "warn" mercenaries they will be held criminally culpable if they survive!!

Things like that --

Would be very careful about anything the US wants to do -- !!!

A few clarifications about the maps...

First, I don't think I'll update the full-Libya map after today. The action is around Tripoli.

Second, I'm working on an even more detailed map of the Tripoli area, to the road/neighborhood level.

Third, I'm soon adding checkpoints and reported Gaddafi troop concentrations on the map.

However, I must make it clear I will NOT update the map with protests or resistance forces. I don't want to compromise people on the ground.

Another map from Iyad (remove the .)

AUDIO in Arabic

English:

Peace be upon you. I am an Egyptian citizen sending a message to the Libyan people. You have sacrificed a lot and spilled much blood. Remember your martyrs. Remember 42 years that you did not accomplish anything significant nor aided by the other Arab countries that have been enjoying the oil and the benefits of the oil. Remember that you began your revolution and there is no retreat from it…Either a revolution completes itself and you achieve what you desire and you benefit from the fruits of this blessed revolution or there is retreat and subservience under the governance of this immoral regime and this criminal that says that the army gave the opportunity to negotiate with the “terrorists.” Are you terrorists?? If you thought you were terrorists, then negotiate. And if your faith in yourselves tells you that you are terrorists then negotiate with these criminals. These are the true terrorists. There is no negotiation except after the departure of Gaddhafi and his children off the chest of the Libyan people. and Thank you.

Thank You Nelly Furtado!
Posted on February 28, 2011 by S050

Since word of lavish, private concerts got out, many people have been urging those celebrities to give the money back to the Libyan people. Yet despite these pleas, none of them have given any comment on the matter, that is until Nelly Furtado spoke up.

On twitter, she wrote: “”In 2007, I received $1 million from the Qaddafi clan to perform a 45 minute show for guests at a hotel in Italy. I am going to donate the $.”

She is the first of many celebrities that were paid by the Gaddafi family, to comment on the matter at all and even better, to give the money back. Our thanks go out to Nelly, and let’s hope that she set a good example for the others who were paid by the Gaddafi’s.

Libyan government faxes Libyana employees telling them to rally in support of government
Posted on February 17, 2011 by s0urce

Libyan government sent out a fax to Libyana, asking employees to come out to Saha El-Khadra for a pro-Gaddafi rally. Libyana is one of the two mobile phone providers in Libya. Both Libyana and Madar were owned up until recently by Muhammad Gaddafi. Libyan tweeter @Doma is in Tripoli, and has reported that “Downtown closed off, processions of pro-regime demonstrators driving around.”

Libyan nationals studying abroad have recently been contacted via phone and informed that they must participate in counter-protests to a solidarity demonstration held in Washington D.C. or they will be denied their scholarships. Tickets to Washington DC and hotel rooms are being paid for, compensation likely.

Pro-Gaddafi ralliers in Benghazi on February 16 not from Benghazi, paid to hold protests and were driven to location
Posted on February 17, 2011 by s0urce

Multiple sources in Benghazi confirm that participants in pro-Gaddafi rallies on February 16 were not from the city, but rather from the west of Libya. Many claim that those participating were released from jail and well-compensated to stand against Benghazi demonstrators.

Chavez would not condemn Gaddafi as a murderer like everyone else because he says he is his friend, he needs to know what really happened

Chavez doesn't accept that world would not condem bombing on Falluja, Israel's bombings against Palestinians same way it condemns Gaddafi

Chavez opened door to any "friendly" country to join in a mediation initiative he is launching to reach peaceful outcome in #libya #feb17

Chavez might be only leader that could talk Gaddafi into a comprise. He's still his friend unlike Gaddafi's other friends who ditched him

Chavez thinks there are credible signs that US might be taking military action against #Libya. Yesterday US mobilised its warships

Gaddafi probably prefers a foreign intervention. It would make him a martyr of imperialism instead of vanishing like BenAli & mubarak

When Clinton was asked about US naval forces mobilised, she said: humantinarian. But she also said: "no options are off the table" #libya

Saddam's face with that defiant look just before he was hung in a pathetic non institutional set-up, made him look brave for many Arabs !

I am guessing Gaddafi would rather get some dramatic end, rather than sit around reading our tweets making fun of him :) #libya #feb17

US warships according to US officials are mobilised close to #Libya's coast to use the helicopters for humanitarian assistance !

"Unfit to lead" & "delusional" says the US about Muammar Gaddafi. Is that news for you? He has been like this for a very looong time!

Archive pictures of US Naval forces being repositioned closer to #Libya. US says: for humanitarian assistance

@Hispamail para mi un bloqueo del espacio aéreo ya es la puerta a mas intervención. Pero eso pienso yo, Dima.

U.S. silent as Iraqi regime cracks down
The U.S.-backed al-Maliki government imprisoned intellectuals and used live ammunition on protesters

Iraqi police arrest a protester during a demonstration in Baghdad, Iraq, Friday, Feb. 25, 2011. Thousands marched on government buildings and clashed with security forces in cities across Iraq on Friday, in the largest and most violent anti-government protests here since political unrest began spreading in the Arab world several weeks ago.

We saw it with Yemen, and now we're seeing it again with Iraq: The Obama administration is conspicuously quiet when friendly Middle East regimes use ugly tactics -- including violence and imprisoning peaceful demonstrators -- to quell growing protest movements in their countries.

That's in marked contrast to the administration's tough stand when similar tactics are employed by unfriendly governments like the one in Iran. In a statement yesterday, the White House "strongly condemned the Iranian government's organized intimidation campaign and arrests of political figures, human rights defenders, political activists, student leaders, journalists and bloggers."

But in one of the least-noticed stories of the week, the U.S.-backed government of Nouri al-Maliki in Iraq has resorted to imprisoning 300 journalists, intellectuals and lawyers in order to stop ongoing protests, according to a well-reported Washington Post dispatch from Baghdad.

The Post story reports that about 30 people have been killed -- at least some of them gunned down by government forces seeking to disperse protests. And the imprisoned dissidents are not being treated humanely, according to one journalist who was detained:
Just before they were freed, however, Hadi was held in a room where about 300 people sat on the floor. They had black hoods over their heads. Many were groaning, their shirts bloodied. Some wore suits and ties. An elderly man had passed out. Hadi recognized a friend, a TV broadcaster, among them.

Iraq may be safest Arab country: Maliki
(AFP) – 1 day ago
BAGHDAD — ....

Maliki's remarks came as he reiterated his optimism that an Arab League summit set to be held in Baghdad on March 29 would go ahead as scheduled, despite the upheaval.

"Iraq could be the safest country (in the Arab world) at this stage," Maliki told a news conference in the capital's heavily fortified Green Zone.

Though violence is much lower than its peak in 2006 and 2007 across Iraq, attacks still occur regularly, and the number of people killed in January, 259, was the highest in four months.

On the Arab League summit, Maliki said: "We are still optimistic about holding the summit in Baghdad, and the Arab League still wants it."

Starting with the east, confirmed that yesterday's airstrike on arms depots in Adjabia missed. #Libya

Interestingly, it seems like an intentional miss, it's basically a series of 10 bunkers. Can't be missed except on purpose.

Also confirmed that Gaddafi forces have retaken Ras Lanouf, and all the coast up to at least Bishr.

Not clear yet whether Marsa Barayqa is with Gaddafi or liberated.

There are military preparations in Ajdabia, I can't reveal them. But there are real fears it is the next target for a ground assault.

Fears are that Ajdabia is not as well defended as Benghazi. Defenders have very high morale but they also need guns and training.

That being said, all attacks by Gaddafi on major cities to date have failed miserably. That's kinda comforting by itself.

Quick report from Zawiya: Everyone's pissed off. The whole city is pissed off. Family was shot at a Gaddafi checkpoint earlier. #Libya

Gaddafi checkpoints are still too close to Azawiya for comfort.

Confirmed that Gaddafi called a notable person in the city and threatened airstrikes, and offered to negotiate.

Also confirmed that people completely refuse negotiations and even the prospect of negotiations.

As far as I know Azawiya has protests at this moment, but no attacks/fighting.

Misurata also has protests, and as far as I know there were no attacks today. Although I'm still waiting for a detailed report.

Azawiya is pretty much under seige; supplies won't last the week. Gaddafi wants it bad. It needs relief, in a very military sense.

Oh no. Alarming news from Tripoli.

Eyewitness went from Tripoli towards Azawiya and described the military build up by Gaddafi forces...

He's gone beyond tanks & infantry, he's brought in Grad rocket launchers.

There are over 20 checkpoints between Swanni and Azzarah and the forces are concentrated in Azzarah.

Checkpoints are manned by Khamis Brigade, soldiers are on edge and ready to shoot at the slightest provocation.

That being said, Azawiya people are alert and ready for an attack. They know it's coming and their morale is sky high.

At the same time, Gaddafi's troops despite all the build up are in low spirits. Very low.

Lemme move on to Tripoli. This is an "old" (12+ hrs ago) report, I should be getting another one soon. But here it is anyway.

Streets empty. People mostly go to buy food. Trying to get by and adjust.

There are spies now and Gaddafi is getting extra paranoid about Tripoli. It's getting dangerous for our sources as well.

Tajoura is very tense. There were small demonstrations. Regime had removed grafitti/signs, but last night people put them back.

Regime has control of Tajoura in the morning. At night it's pretty much a liberated neighborhood.

We have an exact count of people killed last Friday in Tripoli protests: 64

This figure does not include people who are missing since that day. #Libya #Tripoli

Confirmed heavy activity at Mitiga military airport, with unknown destinations.

Some vague reports about clashes in Sibratha, with deaths happening. No news about Zlitan which remains with Gaddafi.

Finally, media people who want to talk to eyewitnesses in Tripoli, seriously folks, not the right time at all.

Media people, I know it's your job, but please be responsible and don't put people's lives in danger to get a story

Libya: Pro-Gaddafi forces battling to retake strategic city of Zawiya
Libyan rebels have repulsed an attempt by a crack military unit loyal to Muammar Gaddafi to retake the strategically-vital city of Zawiya.

11:44AM GMT 01 Mar 2011

The rebels exchanged fire for several hours with the elite Khamis Brigade, commanded by one of Col Gaddafi's sons, who attacked simultaneously from six directions using tanks, armoured vehicles and machine guns. There was no word on casualties in Zawiya, 30 miles west of the capital, Tripoli.

"We damaged a tank with an RPG," a rebel fighter said. "The mercenaries fled after that."

Mohammad al-Maktouf, an influential tribal leader in Zawiya was reported to have received a call from Col Gaddafi, warning of air strikes if rebels do not vacate the city centre today.

...

A similar attempt was made by pro-Gaddafi forces on Monday night to retake the city of Misrata, Libya's third-largest city, 125 miles east of Tripoli. Rebels and pro-government forces, who both control parts of an airbase near the city, are continuing to exchange fire.
