Metro anti-terrorism teams to begin random bag inspections to avert attacks

By Ann Scott Tyson and Derek Kravitz

Thursday, December 16, 2010; 9:44 PM

Metro anti-terrorism teams will immediately start random inspections of passengers' bags and packages to try to protect the rail and bus system from attack, transit officials said Thursday.

I heard two people interviewed by the local noozradio say that this was hunky dory with them so they could be as safe on the Metro as they are on airplanes.

We are fast becoming a nation of candy-assed, compliant, sedated, easily controlled wussies.

2. I think it's just about here. I'm not out at night much anymore, but I've heard in
this area if you're out at night in the wee hours there's a good chance the cops will pull you over and ask for ID, etc., where you're going ... especially if your car is not new looking.

7. Americans suck in this regard.
We have lost our self-respect and fighting spirit. Honestly, our first and only reaction to proposed warrantless searches should be "HELL NO -- I've read the constitution and random searches are not covered by it."

8. The ACLU is already on this. They say the Supremes have made this sort of thing easier.
They've held some fucked up notion that searches of our citizens for public safety are hunky dory.

The ACLU sees them as unconstitutional because, unlike the airport bullshit, these are open to abuse by their "random" nature.

This shit makes me see red.

30. And soon they will be installing Chertoff's naked body scanners.
That is why it was so important to stop them from installing in the airports. But so many wimps and scaredy cats decided THAT was okay, because we all want to be 'safe'.

It's all about money. And control. And if people don't stand up now, that picture is what America will look like everywhere.

What a scam it all this, this 'terror' garbage. We are in more danger of being mugged or murdered by other Americans, or dying on the road, or any number of other threats, than we are of ever being the victim of a terror attack.

In fact, terrorists have won. They have done what they wanted to do, scared the entire 'home of the brave' into total submission. The only thing they did wrong, was to make it profitable for the very people they were angry with in the first place.

When can we expect the body scanners in malls? I'm guessing by next Christmas.

The people should have refused to let this happen at the airports.

And the one guy who did make a stink about it, and then was handed an eleven thousand dollar fine, he was dissed by many folks for having planned to do it.

As though he was doing it for attention. But it does take planning - you certainly are not going to fight with TSA if you are on your way to see a relative's wedding, or for a scheduled operation.

32. i guess we better keep our weed in our pockets
if they had a warrant and were searching for weapons and they found drugs normally they could steal the drugs but not charge you because the warrant specified a search for weapons, they have no warrant in this case, what would they do for a quarter pound of grass? what would they do for 10 grams? they have these searches in france, you never know where the cops will have a checkpoint set up.

34. Actually that's not correct.
If while conducting a search under a search warrant officers see other illegal contraband, they can arrest you for it. What they can't do is actively search in places and for things not covered in the warrant. However, again, if while conducting the search warrant as specified and they notice something else illegal, they can and will arrest you for that.

For example: Say the police come to your house with a search warrant to search your garage for a stolen vehicle. They cannot go into your bedroom going through your stuff looking for weed. If they did and found weed it wouldn't be a legal search. However, if they go into your garage as the warrant specifies and see a dozen television boxes stacked up in your garage. They can look (not move them around) to see if they can identify serial numbers and if they see serial numbers and those numbers come back as being reported stolen. You're busted.

So if a warrant allows them to go through your pockets looking for a weapon and they discover a bag of weed in your pocket, you're busted.

39. I would imagine all states play by very similar rules regarding the 4th amendment
One of my brothers is a Los Angeles Deputy Sheriff and what I posted above is how he explained it to me. Basically they (cops) have to stick to the what the warrant specifies, but, if they notice something illegal in the process and they didn't have to deviate from the specifics of the warrant to notice it, its fair game and they can arrest you on it.

Its no different than if they witnessed someone through a window possessing something illegal, at that point they don't need a warrant; they witnessed a crime taking place. Similarly, if while lawfully conducting a search warrant they witness a crime, like finding contraband while staying within the limits of a warrant, they can act to arrest the person responsible.

Even if there were some gray area here, 99.9% of the time they would still arrest you and leave it up to the courts to decide.

One thing for sure, I'm not trying to defend them. Gawd knows I can't stand the police even though one of my brothers is one. I love him, he's my brother and nothing will change that, but, I can't stand the police nonetheless. But what I am saying is; this is what they teach in their police academies regarding searches.

Anyway, take it easy reggie the dog

Peace,
Xicano
