5. Lots of those who use Roku to stream Netflix miss out on a lot of its features. |
|
There are lots of channels there, and most of them are free.

6. It's a small set top box that lets people stream Netflix to their tvs, |
|
but it also has lots of free channels available as well. With it I don't miss having cable or satellite at all with it. Here it is: http://www.roku.com/

9. The ethernet cable just goes from your router to the Roku box. |
|
Or if you have a wireless router it can connect that way as well. Then instead of watching Netflix streaming videos on your computer monitor you can watch them on your large screen tv. I watch Netflix streaming videos as well as those from Amazon on my 50" plasme.
But the Roku box also has many, many other channels as well and most of them are free. It's great for those of us who no longer have cable or satellite tv.

10. My roomie has netflix here but we just recently lost cable. |
|
(I don't ask questions so don't know why, but I was ticked). I need to find out if she's aware of this, so thanks again.

11. There is a free Roku channel called Roku Newscaster. |
|
It has FOX, ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, Al Jazeera, NASA, CNet, current, ESPN, C-SPAN, NPR, PRI, and the BBC. Most of these channels have a number of sub-channels such as all the news and commentary shows on the networks. Actually I think that Al Jazeera is the only one that is just a single channel.
You buy the box and you never "have" to subscribe to anything. Most people get it for streaming Netflix, but there is a lot more to it than that. A good bang for the buck.

13. Cable channels available this way are just the internet feeds of those channels |
|
They also make past shows/segments available. It's not a substitute for cable if you want all the cable channels, (I don't care about that myself) but the main caveat is that when someone speaks of watching MSNBC or Al Jazeera English, or CNN International live, it's just the internet stream. In other words the video quality is very low. But if you don't want to pay the cable company month after month for 200 lousy channels of crud just to tune in a couple of news channels, then having a Roku is a great deal. In addition to music services like Pandora, and video streaming from Netflix, HuluPlus, Amazon (which all require subscriptions) you can get free live internet access to all the cable news channels via "private channels" like JustinTV and Nowhere TV. Nowhere TV is how I added the live feed of BBC TV news to my Roku. The so-called private channels that aggregate live feeds are not listed in the Roku channel store for one reason or another. Newscaster and Mediafly are two channels that can be found in the official Roku channel store that enable me to watch Al Jazeera English service live and podcasts of Democracy Now.
With all these news channels available through the internet and collected one way or another through the Roku for my TV, I can live happily without cable tv. For someone else who wants more of what cabletv offers, like HBO for example or, someone who just wants to look at Chris Matthews' face in HD, a Roku would not be a substitute.
