It looks like the House and Senate will agree to a two-week funding measure for the federal government that will cut $4 billion in spending. On balance, this is closer to what the Republicans want than what the Democrats want.
WASHINGTON – The House passed emergency short-term legislation Tuesday to cut federal spending by $4 billion and avert a government shutdown. Senate Democrats agreed to follow suit, handing Republicans an early victory in their drive to rein in government.
When it came time to vote, Democrats split, 104 in favor and 85 against. The leadership was similarly divided, Hoyer supporting the legislation and the party's leader, Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California, opposed. Republicans voted 231-6 in favor.
Privately, Senate Democratic officials expressed displeasure with the White House, saying the administration had remained above the fray in recent days.
Of course this is just some early sparring. Congress and the White House now have to agree to spending levels for the rest of this fiscal year. Maybe the Democrats will fight harder and prevail in the main event. Maybe...
