Gaddafi defiant as US warships sail into Mediterranean

TRIPOLI (AlArabiya.net, Agencies)
Two U.S. amphibious assault ships, the USS Kearsarge and the USS Ponce, entered Egypt's Suez Canal on Wednesday, on their way to the Mediterranean as Western nations put more pressure on Muammar Gaddafi to stop a violent crackdown and step aside.

...
The White House said the ships were being redeployed in preparation for possible humanitarian efforts but stressed it "was not taking any options off the table."

...

No-fly zone could be "challenging"
General James Mattis, commander of U.S. Central Command, told a Senate hearing that imposing a no-fly zone would be a "challenging" operation. "You would have to remove air defense capability in order to establish a no-fly zone, so no illusions here," he said. "It would be a military operation."

Analysts said Western leaders were in no mood to rush into the conflict after drawn-out involvements in Afghanistan and Iraq.

19. BBC: Gaddafi loyalists advance to east
2 March 2011 Last updated at 03:29 ET
Gaddafi loyalists advance to east

Forces loyal to the Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi are moving into rebel territory in the east, taking the small town of Brega.

The BBC's John Simpson in the nearby city of Ajdabiya says the 100-vehicle convoy is expected to advance towards it, and have bombed an arms dump there.

<snip>

Our correspondent says Brega was defended by a handful of lightly-armed rebels, but Ajdabiya is much more important target.

It has a large arms dump which has been bombed several times by pro-Gaddafi forces.

The loyalists are now only a couple of miles from Ajdabiya, the defenders say.

BENGHAZI, Libya – Witnesses say a town in the rebel-held east of Libya has come under air attacks and forces loyal to leader Moammar Gadhafi have retaken a nearby oil facility.

The witnesses told The Associated Press they saw two warplanes bomb the eastern part of the town of Ajdabiya at 10 a.m. local time Wednesday. They also said that pro-Gadhafi forces were advancing on the town, some 470 miles (750 kilometers) east of the capital Tripoli.

Ahmed Jerksi, manager of the Sirte oil company which runs the facility in the eastern town of Brega, said pro-Gadhafi forces retook control of the facility, southwest of Ajdabiya.

39. South Africa put the squeeze on Libya and Zimbabwe yesterday
South Africa put the squeeze on Libya and Zimbabwe yesterday, but avoided naming either of Africa's most reviled leaders.

Deputy International Relations Minister Marius Fransman put Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe on notice that South Africa would not allow him to hold an election until he had met outstanding conditions of the power-sharing agreement, including the adoption of a new constitution.

And he said South Africa stood four square behind the UN Security Council's vote on Saturday to refer Muammar Gaddafi's regime to the International Criminal Court.

"This resolution sends a clear and unambiguous message to the Libyan authorities to end the carnage against its people," he said.

Fransman did not mention Mugabe by name and referred to Gaddafi only after almost an hour of questioning by reporters on South Africa's stance on the man many leaders have told to quit.

45. spokesman for the Libyan national transitional council: if it is with the United Nations, it is not
9.44am: Given the new offensive by Gaddafi troops a report in the New York Times that says rebel leaders in Benghazi are debating whether to ask for Western airstrikes under the UN banner, takes on added significance. Interestingly, one of the people it quotes as possibly supporting airstrikes is Abdel-Hafidh Ghoga, a spokesman for the Libyan national transitional council, who, on Monday, said the council was "against any foreign intervention or military intervention". But the Times says Ghoga made clear, "if it is with the United Nations, it is not a foreign intervention":

In a sign of mounting frustration among rebel leaders over Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi's diminished but unyielding grip on power, rebel leaders here are debating whether to ask for Western airstrikes under the United Nations banner, according to four people with knowledge of the deliberations.

By invoking the United Nations, a council of opposition leaders made up of lawyers, academics, judges and other prominent figures is seeking to draw a distinction between such airstrikes and foreign intervention, which the rebels said they emphatically opposed.

55. WikiLeaks: Tent Talk in Libya : a report
....

The meeting concluded with Qaddafi emphasizing

“that as Libya now presides over the AU, there was a possibility for cooperation with AFRICOM in combating terrorism in the Sahara and piracy. He said that he could deal with “‘the new America without reservation”, now that the United States was governed by “a new spirit of change.’”

That may be. But as we’ve seen, for Qaddafi, it’s one thing if foreign leaders are possessed by the spirit of change. It’s quite another when that same spirit drives Libyans into the streets demanding his removal.

Is there any way for protesters to survive without air cover?

It seems clear now that #Gaddafi has the firepower for an incursion into liberated areas, but not to maintain it.

After all, he can't even hold Tripoli tight even with all his army there; look at Tajoura as an example.

There are reports ("credible", not "confirmed") that Sirt is boiling, only thing stopping it is that it's full of Gaddafi's army.

#Gaddafi's military adventures into liberated areas can only mean two things; first, facing more attrition and demoralization.

Second, less pressure on areas that can then openly revolt; as we saw in Mslata recently.

I don't see these attacks as a threat to anyone but #Gaddafi himself. He may be able to walk into a liberated city, but not hold it.

Reports from Tripoli today say that resistance in Tajura has become armed; unconfirmed reports of an RPG ambush on mercenaries.

My contact sent me detailed #Gaddafi troop locations all over Tripoli-Azawiya-Tajura area, will update on my map soon & post.

From what I can see, his troops are arranged defensively, except those facing Azawiya
