Emergency surgery for Serena Williams
Get well soon sis - this is frightening

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/tennis/9411979.stm
<snip>
Wimbledon champion Serena Williams has undergone emergency surgery following the discovery of a blood clot on her lungs, according to reports in America.

Her spokesperson told People magazine that Williams, 29, received treatment on Monday for a haematoma, suffered as a result of a pulmonary embolism.

"Doctors are continuing to monitor her situation closely to avoid additional complications," read a statement.

Williams has not played competitively since winning Wimbledon in July 2010.

The American has been unable to compete after cutting her foot on glass in a restaurant when celebrating her Wimbledon triumph.

According to spokesperson Nicole Chabot, Williams underwent emergency treatment for a haematoma she suffered "as a result of treatment for a more critical situation".

3. That's really unusual for someone of her age and fitness.
I hope she didn't get this from using EPO.

7. Has she had any surgery recently?
A young, fit, friend of mine got a pulmonary embolism after minor "outpatient" knee surgery.

That very well could have killed her on the spot.

10. Not as uncommon as many think
I'm not a doctor, but I did just spend the night in the ER with my wife who was discovered to have multiple clots in both lungs. Long flights, train rides, etc. are enough to raise the risk in themselves. Add birth control pills or hormone therapy and the risk goes higher. A leg or foot injury also raises risk. Additionally, I just read about increased risk of blood clots among otherwise healthy athletes with sickle-cell trait following strenuous physical activity.
The point is, healthy people are certainly at risk, and that includes young people.
