On the 3rd day, DU access is returning!

Finally, finally, finally my ISP provider has received the dns update and I'm not limping along here under a proxy at dial up like speeds.

Just some thoughts and reminders that may be helpful:

For those who have been using proxies to get on: PLEASE consider changing your DU password as those did place you at security risk as per this excellent previous post: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=439x533886

For those who have been locked out, with no access-- and wondered what on earth had been happening, here are links to Skinner's post

For those who want to know where they could go in the future when these problems happen in order to find out what might be happening, consider registering on Yahoo Groups to access the DUPanicRoom

There may well still be lots of other ISP providers that still have not gotten the dns update and thus DU members locked out who are going to feel a little "out of it" when they finally do get back on and will need a friendly "welcome back" and explanation.

I certainly learned a lot throughout this saga.

For future reference, of the free proxies that I tried, the most stable (though still with some limitations) was fiberprox.net, though I still have concerns re: security after using it.

I hope your regular access returns quickly.

20. I do have a t witter acct. but it would be

necessary to have followers or to be following people who knew what was going on. I didn't get any messages on Twitter from DUers, although I did get emails after emailing a few people to see if it was just me.

If DU had a twitter acct and DUers on Twitter were following them, then that would be a very good place to make an announcement as it would appear in the messages of all their followers.

29. Yes, I think I remember someone asking if DU

had a twitter acct or was thinking about having the ability for people to link directly to their Twitter accts. Airc, Skinner or one of the other Admins, said it was something they were thinking about ~ definitely would have been helpful in this situation though :-)

I didn't realize how much time I spend on DU until it was gone. I'm just glad it wasn't hit by Anonymous or some such group.

13. I can't believe I am finally back at DU just now

I am on dialup, had emailed admin and was about to try a public dns link, when I thought I'd give it one more shot.

Even I am surprised at how many times I check in here daily, and how bad it has been to be away this long.

Sigh...finally back and have some catching up to do!

ETA: The DU Panic room - I think I remember that from some time back, completely forgot about that this time. Will check my Yahoo account to see if I signed up. I couldn't find a thing on google whenever I tried to figure out where DU went or if anyone else was having problems. Honestly, it was like DU never existed out there for a brief while.

So the DNS correction finally reached my ISP sometime in the last two hours. I didn't make any changes in my computer's settings.

This is day #3 without direct access. A proxy server is allowing me in now, so I'm not having withdrawal attacks like I was on day #1, but I sure hope that DNS update gets to my ISP soon.

30. I, too, am just returning from limbo.

I was down 2 days, figuring it was a server crash, but yesterday I started searching the innertubes for information on what was happening...figures the only relevant link on Google for "DU crash?" was a gleeful post over at FR.

Then I got a bright idea to search Twitter where someone posted the DNS# to use to access. Kind of limited, but, hey, at least I could read posts. After reading your threads about the technical work-arounds to gain full access, I decided not to make a bad problem worse by screwing up my networking software and just suffer in virtual silence.

Kind of makes you realize just how good this site is when you can get to it for a few days...so, DU is back and the world is a little brighter today (the snow squall that's creating whiteout conditions here, notwithstanding). :-)
