Military files 22 charges against Pvt. Bradley Manning, including aiding enemy, in alleged mass leak of classified files

http://www.breakingnews.com/

The military has filed 22 additional charges against Pvt. Bradley Manning, including aiding the enemy, in the alleged massive leak of classified files, NBC News reports.

Manning is accused of illegally downloading tens of thousands of classified documents from both the U.S. military and the State Department that were later released by WikiLeaks, Jim Miklaszewski and Courtney Kube report.

The 23-year-old Manning was first charged on July 6 with eight charges including violating the Espionage Act by transmitting classified information to an unauthorized third party when he worked as a military intelligence analyst in Baghdad.

NBC reported that Pentagon and military officials said some of the classified information WikiLeaks released endangered the lives of informants and others who had cooperated with U.S. forces in Afghanistan:

1. And of course, the prosecution can PROVE this?
Right, I forgot. Military tribunal and all. They don't have to prove a thing...

2. Of course they do. Where do you get that idea from.
He has right to trial by a jury of his peers under UCMJ.

3. And of course UCMJ will be observed, right?
After what's been happening at Gitmo, you can still say this?

4. Manning's not an enemy combatant
But when this thing is over, he'll be treated like one.

5. What does Gitmo have to do with UCMJ?
Edited on Wed Mar-02-11 06:11 PM by Statistical
Who at Gitmo had their UCMJ rights violated? Who at Gitmo had rights under UCMJ to begin with?

The UCMJ only applies to US military personnel. No one in Gitmo was a uniformed member of the armed services of the United States.

On edit: dyslexic moment

12. You just refuse to see my point, don't you?
HE'S NOT GOING TO GET PROPER CIVIL RIGHTS, EITHER AS A CIVILIAN OR MEMBER OF THE MILITARY. HE WILL ONLY EVER SEE A KANGAROO COURT. THAT IS WHAT THE LEGACY OF BUSH AND GITMO ARE.

Now, if you'll pull your head out of your ass and smell the coffee...

14. That's quite an accusation.
I don't see how you can say (in all caps no less) that he won't receive a fair trial. With what facts are you basing this on? The military court system isn't a kangaroo court.

He faces a courts martial because he is a uniformed member of the armed forces, and the laws and regulations for them differ from those in the civilian world.

15. Pull your own head out of your ass. He will get a fair trial under UCMJ.
We all knew what the potential penalties were for disclosing information, let alone stealing it. He chose to do so anyway. He knew the risks.

11. I wonder if the circumstances of his incarceration will come up in the proceedings?
Or if that will be ruled inadmissible by the oh-so-sterling-and-impartial judges who will oversee this case?

It's a chance one has to take, I suppose, when exposing crimes against humanity that the perpetrator will not take kindly to it.
