I'm just curious to know, are there any TV and radio stations for liberal Christians?
I know a lot of liberal Christians who would love to be able to tune in to a liberal channel for people of faith, but it seems that all of the Christian radio and TV shows are all for right wing fundamentalists. Am I wrong here, or are liberal people of faith just shit out of luck when it comes to religious radio or TV?

1. No. We had a TV channel for a couple years, but it died from lack of funding.
unfortunately, the rightwing is really big on funding radio and tv stations and newspapers and magazines to get their message out, because folks with a lot of money will donate to those things to get their message out.

The leftwing is awful at funding such things, mostly, I think, because the people with money think "Holy shit, there are hungry people in my town!" or similar things.

3. I'm in your camp and it's frustrating. Even my local churches are nothing more than
right wing political rallies. I do not think Jesus would approve but not being Jesus I can't say for sure.
One thing I do know about Jesus. He was so radical and anti government that they put him to death.

5. Good question. I .....
....have never heard of a liberal Christian station; Jim Wallis, of the Sojourner Magazine, appears regularly as a guest on progressive programming on the TV and radio. There are plenty of ministers and believers of the "liberal" persuasion, but most of them are too busy acting, instead of talking, helping people, (the poor, those who have not received justice, those who need a helping hand, with counseling, food, clothing and education); It would be good to hear of their point of view more on the media. Some just do not want to get involved in politics.

6. There are liberal faith groups.
None that I know of have radio or tv shows. But some surely have news letters and email updates that will allow liberal christians to remain connected to their values.

7. It Seems to be a Lack of Spiritual Liberals Supporting
and listening/watching such things. The cost isn't that great for low-powered UHF TV and if its in an Urban area I believe it would be under the Must-Carry provision for local cable and could certainly be received on antennae. Low-powered FM is even less. Many of the local fundy stations apparently have a lot of volunteers.

10. Prairie Home Companion is almost like church :)
Actually, it's as close as I come to church these days.

It's a good question. I used to design for a xtian music publication where the writing staff was mostly liberal, but the industry is very much ruled by an old guard. At least, it was about 10 years ago. Maybe that's changed.

12. Oh, and there is the Day 1 podcast, but that's a weekly sermon, not so much political.
But it's excellent, and since it's mainlines churches only, the sermons have a strong liberal bent to them. (and by "strong liberal" I don't mean so much political, but I do mean very much taking Jesus' words as incredibly important). They get the best of the best preachers to do sermons, and there is a 10 minute or so interview with each preacher before and after the sermon.

I've seen him on Rachel's TV show too.

I think he's president of some interfaith group.

18. Hello WolverineDG!
I used to think that I wasn't welcomed here many years ago for being someone that believes in a faith, but that is just not the case. There are many here that share the same faith as I do, and there are people with other beliefs, too, and atheists, who are respectful, and like us, just want respect for what they believe, and give it to all.

As for the 'being welcome here' you're referencing, sometimes people say things they shouldn't, and the site guidelines maintain no one has to withstand a personal attack from anyone. If you see, or feel a member has done so in their post, please click 'alert' and click the appropriate reason for the alert.

No one has to believe anything someone else believes regarding faith, and that's their right, and they can state such, but being told you're (fill in the blank) for believing whatever you believe, is something that should be alerted.

God bless you!

19. Welcome!
(I know you aren't new here. Just welcoming you. Over the years, I've had some folks here question my belief system. A few seemed offended. But most DUers are respectful, in my experience, no matter if they agree with/share my beliefs or not. I think that the intolerant organized religions are what people are turned off by.)

20. that last sentence is exactly it, H2O Man. And for me, as a LGBTer going to church was often a
practice in patience and controlling my anger. It helped! ha. God gave me a lesson in not screaming to various pastors that they were ignorant bigots.

21. WFUV (Fordham University radio in NYC)...
is about the closest thing I can think of.

The sermons on Sunday morning are enjoyable, and a station that offers the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck can't be all bad.

23. "Liberal" and "Christian" don't always fit well together.
http://skepticsannotatedbible.com/cruelty/long.html

It's like looking for liberal islam, or liberal catholicism.... so much of the liberal tradition is directly contrary to the precepts of the religious tradition.

That being said, if you expand beyond christianity, you might have more luck:

24. Be that as it may, there's a long tradition of liberal Christianity in the US

Starting, as incongruous as it sounds, with the Puritans and the Baptists.

25. Try State of Belief Radio- Religion and Radio done differently
You might try stateofbelief.com a weekly radio program with Rev Dr Welton Gaddy from Interfaith Alliance. Some very interesting interviews. It is podcast and also broadcast but on a limited number of stations since air america folded. It not just for Christians, for all faiths and those who follow none.
