Norman Goldman has found a way to possibly beat Walker!
I heard it on his radio show today.

There is an election on April 5th for a Supreme Court Judge. If Kloppenburg (D) wins, the Wisconsin Supreme Court will be tilted left.

This will give WI Dems a fighting chance during challenges to any of Walker's shenanigans.

Norm's post is here: http://www.normangoldman.com/blog/blog-details.asp?BID=191

Kloppenburg's website is here: http://www.kloppenburgforjustice.com/

6. Looks like the Repug is an incumbent (so it's not an open seat)
which usually means it's more of an uphill battle, and I know low-turnout races tend to favor the cons... but I think we've at least got the passion on our side this time.

Here's to beginning the turnaround from WI's weird right-wing swing of last November.

17. Yes, Walker has made him very vulnerable. Prosser is a nice enough guy in person, but a complete
basket case as a justice.

7. If you know anyone in Wisconsin who can vote
tell them to vote for her. We've heard her speak a couple of times and she is impressive. On the other hand, the incumbent, a former Republican legislator, has openly said he will be able to complement the work Walker and the legislature will be doing. They don't even try to hide it anymore.

11. She can't accept donations.
This needs to be volunteer, door-to-door type campaign.

From her site:

"There are many ways to contribute to the campaign, but giving money isn’t one of them!

That’s because The Kloppenburg for Justice Committee is limiting fundraising, spending and refusing special interest money through Wisconsin’s public financing law. By law, we cannot accept any financial contributions for the remainder of the campaign. Both candidates in this race are participating in public financing."

16. Very true. What you may not know is that Wisconsin's recent
additions to the court are rapublican zealots who only seemed concerned with infighting. It would be a MAJOR coup to change the balance of the court.

Edited on Thu Mar-03-11 04:31 PM by Major Hogwash
It would seem that it would be more liberal since it is from the Northern tier of states, but I don't know.

21. tilting the court left?
Those are the tactics of the "enemy"---tilting the court system in their favor. Perhaps the genie is already out of the bottle on that political ploy since Citizens United in the US Supreme Court, but it is a sorry strategy to employ---to be biased like the right is.

28. It is not a sorry strategy. It is the way our system is supposed to work.
Judges make a difference.

Just because Wisconsin elects a liberal justice to the Supreme Court does not mean that justice will decide against Walker in a case. How the justice decides a case will depend on the law that applies.

Most issues that a Supreme Court decides don't involve politics. But deciding litigation involving Walker will have political repercussions.

As I said, however, justices apply the law in cases. They can't arbitrarily decide a case according to their political beliefs. Electing a liberal justice will not guarantee a particular result in a case. Far from it.

41. Voting for a liberal candidate for a supreme court position as has
nothing to do with separation of powers.

Separation of powers would be placed in question if a governor could appoint a judge without the approval of the legislature or at least one house in the legislature.

The voters of Wisconsin have to vote either for a liberal or for a conservative. Either way, their vote will affect the political balance on the court.

The political party or views of a judge is of no importance in most cases, but it could be important in Wisconsin in the foreseeable future.

Sorry, but your question makes no sense. Separation of powers has nothing to do with whether a voter chooses to vote or a liberal or a conservative judge. I you think it does, please explain.

25. Hey, that's what I thought, too
The Supreme Court in Wisconsin really provides a parallel to what's going on in the whole state:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=433&topic_id=619515

Last weekend, in a thread about why/why not send in or call for Federal (CIC) help, I said:

"...If our State Senators continue working away from the office for
any length of time -- or, in little more than a month -- the
upcoming April election will loom larger and larger in importance.

On Tuesday, April 5th, the two candidates in the (allegedly)
non-partisan Supreme Court Justice race will be going head-to-head
for voter approval.

If the last two elections to that august body are any indication,
this is going to be the Mother of All Non-Partisan Elections.
A "Nothing to See Here, Move Along (Let the public corruption
continue)" Republican is running against a nice lady litigator
and prosecutor from the Dept. of Justice in Madison.

At the moment, the Wisconsin Supreme Court is tilted 4 to 3,
with conservative, Republican-types holding the majority. So
if the incumbent Republican loses, it will be big news. It
might even lead to a further re-shuffling of the Court, since
the most recently elected Republican, a particularly porcine
and truculent fellow, got in trouble for lying about his
opponent in most of his TV ads, in HIS election. The Court
(predictably) split 3 against 3 when they voted on a reprimand....

...But if the protests continue -- if the State Senators continue
to hold out, and it stays "immovable protesters vs. implacable
Republicans," a resolution through the Third Branch of government,
the Top Court, could be one way out. And the April election would
be the tipping point.

So maybe there's lots of time, yet."
