Poll Shows Budget-Cuts Dilemma
Many Deem Big Cuts to Entitlements 'Unacceptable,' but Retirement and Means Testing Draw Support
By NEIL KING JR. and SCOTT GREENBERG

WASHINGTON — Less than a quarter of Americans support making significant cuts to Social Security or Medicare to tackle the country's mounting deficit, according to a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll, illustrating the challenge facing lawmakers who want voter buy-in to alter entitlement programs.

In the poll, Americans across all age groups and ideologies said by large margins that it was "unacceptable'' to make significant cuts in entitlement programs in order to reduce the federal deficit. Even tea party supporters, by a nearly 2-to-1 margin, declared significant cuts to Social Security "unacceptable."...

A small group of senators in both parties has begun discussions that include changes to entitlement programs, as well as to the tax code. House Republicans say they will address entitlements in their next budget. And several likely 2012 GOP candidates have vowed to to shore up the finances of Social Security and Medicare as part of their campaigns.

But Republican Bill McInturff and Democrat Peter Hart, the pollsters who conducted the survey, said the poll raises warning signs for anyone proposing cuts to the three main entitlement programs, including Medicaid, that provide health and retirement benefits to seniors and the poor...

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

67% of Americans didn't want tax cuts for the rich, and we know what happened.

3. That ought to be the perfect issue to catapult many Democrats
into office. But somehow, the elections keep turning out differently than one would predict.

5. Well, they need to stop voting Republican then
There is a serious disconnect in these people. Every single time people vote in Republicans they get stuff they don't like. Yet they do it over and over.

I get really tired of hearing that the Republican party is down to its last legs because it is only tea partiers and fat cats. For a group on its last legs they seem to set the agenda pretty damn well.

6. Who cares?
After all, it's the authoritarian right wing's habit to elect DICTATORS ... who, once elected (by hook or by crook), have a "MANDATE" to enact whatever the Hell they want. Their constituency accepts this autocratic behavior because they're authoritarians. After all, it's so much easier to follow the leader than think for one's self and actually defend such thoughts and stances.

9. Who indeed cares?
Because satisfying this small segment of the electorate is all government seems to do anymore. Yeah, you're going to have to take in your mom and dad in their declining years. Seems only fair, since they took care of you? Of course, you were growing up then, getting stronger, smarter, bigger and more mature. They're only getting older and frailer. There aren't any of the joyous milestones of growing up, just a lengthening list of restrictions. But since billionaires can't possibly be asked to pay another three cents in taxes on every dollar they "earn" over $250,000 each year, that's your future. Enjoy!

12. They don't give a fuck.
Some 70% supported a public option. That was the first thing to go.

We still aren't out of the wars.

We're still throwing poor people under the bus. Luckily summer is coming, because they just got heating assistance cut. But the rich, they got their TAXES cut!

I'm not allowed to state a conclusion to all of that, but the facts are the facts.
