12-year-old Colo. boy in custody, parents shot dead, siblings wounded
BURLINGTON, Colo. - A 12-year-old boy who reported shots fired at his eastern Colorado home is in custody after officers arrived to find his parents dead and two of his siblings in critical condition.

Steve Johnson of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation says the boy called 911 Tuesday evening to report at least three people had been shot at his Burlington home.

When officers arrived, they found the bodies of 50-year-old Charles Long and his wife, 51-year-old Marilyn Long. Two of their children were wounded - a 5-year-old girl and a 9-year-old boy.

-----

They said the Long children were homeschooled and the family was deeply religious, attending one neighborhood church on Saturdays and another on Sundays.

1. I wish someone could explain to me why having guns around the house is a good idea?

7. Huh. I was about to blame his insular, religious upbringing...
...and point out that living through Christ did nothing to prevent this kid from being a crazed murderer. I have to think their homelife was pretty repressive.

For most families, guns in the house is not a problem. Either they are llocked up or else children are taught not to touch them. (The key is to demystify them by allowing children access to unloaded firearms under close supervision.) But then, most children don't want to murder their parents and siblings.

20. because having guns makes it easier to go hunting
or to the gun range to target shoot. I grew up in a house with guns and would have never done such an act. The kid could have easily killed everyone with a baseball bat too.

5. Bet he was on psychiatric medication (if he did it)
these shooters often come from a "deeply religous family".
Sometimes these deeply religous families are abusive to children (not always)

9. I doubt it. The family probably thought they could rely on prayer...
...to drive "the devil" out of him.

If the kid was really disturbed (do yah think?), medication might have prevented this.

15. Having guns with gun locks would have definitely prevented it.
Wonder why the NRA opposes them?

17. Probably, but trigger locks are not that hard to pry off...
...if one is determined. The best bet is a safe.

13. I'll bet he wasn't, if indeed he was from a 'deeply religious homeschooled
family" who went to church on saturday and sunday.

Oftentimes mental health issues are seen as willful, or a question of giving into 'sin'. I'd be surprised to find out that psych meds are involved.

18. Tragic.
Guns, religious zealots and homeschooling. I'm willing to bet there was strong discipline going on in that house and one of the kids finally snapped.
