After we ended our conversation, I could not escape the feeling that the minister had called to say goodbye.

Shahbaz Bhatti knew his days were numbered and he knew why - because of his outspoken criticism of Pakistan's controversial blasphemy laws, and his calls for reform.

Under the statutes, anyone found guilty of insulting Islam can be sentenced to death. Convictions can be based on no more than hearsay.

1. Has the judicial system ever asked why people keep supposedly insulting Islam?

Two people are in a dispute. The first person wins. But surprise, the second person says that the first person insulted Islam. And then the first person is hounded out of the village, city, job, country, etc. (If they're not killed first).

If you read up on the law, you will see this happens in land disputes, when teachers give out bad grades, to the strange villager that nobody likes, etc.

Has the government or judicial system of that country ever asked why that always seems to happen?
