The Five States Where Teacher's Unions Are Illegal Have The Lowest Test Scores

Update: A commenter points out this fact uses test scores from 1999. Based on 2007 test scores the trend is weaker: NC is 47th; TX is 45th; SC is 39th; GA is 26th; VA is 25th. These rankings come from a composite of ACT and SAT scores among high school graduates, which is a measure that accounts for different participation rates.

Previously: Here's an impossibly good statistic for union defenders, dug up by the Maureen Downey at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Only five states do not allow collective bargaining for educators, effectively banning teachers unions. Those states and their SAT/ACT rankings are as follows:

South Carolina – 50th

North Carolina – 49th

Georgia – 48th

Texas – 47th

Virginia – 44th

Meanwhile ground zero of the union battle, Wisconsin, is ranked 2nd in the country.

3. A very telling statistic!
Recall that while we were bailing out the banks, we were told that it would be wrong to restrict the pay and bonuses of the banksters because these banks might lose their "talent." In a sense, they were public employees. Yet now, we are being told that we must restrict the pay of teachers. We must somehow forget the idea of losing their talent. Now the statistics in this thread shows where restricting teacher pay will get you.

David Sirota's column discusses this "Two Public Pay Standards."

4. The underlying point may be correct, but the specifics in there are wrong.
Specifically, their notion of a composite of ACT/SAT rankings is really faulty.

Take a look, for instance, at WA. They're ranked 10th even though they're really a middle-of-the-pack state. This is because almost nobody there takes the ACT (and therefore, the ones who do... do quite well). The ranking gave equal weight to the overall ranking for each test even though MANY states really only use one of the two.

5. SAT testing is useless in this context because it only measures college-bound kids. nt

7. Not in Georgia (or so I've been told my entire life). We apparently encourage all students,
college-bound or not, to take these tests.

That would certainly depress the state's overall ranking.
