Voicemails detail Edwards affair

Marta and I donated more than I care to admit to this slime.

RALEIGH (WTVD) -- ABC11 has obtained voicemail messages purportedly left by John Edwards as a former aide says he tried to cover up his affair with campaign worker Rielle Hunter.

The recordings were turned over to a federal grand jury that's investigating the former senator and presidential candidate.

Edwards has admitted to having an affair with Hunter and fathering a daughter with her. The affair began during Edwards' presidential campaign in 2006. Hunter worked for Edwards' political action committee, shooting behind-the-scenes video as the Democrat prepared to launch his White House campaign.

According to former Edwards aide Andrew Young, he and his wife Cheri lived a life on the run to keep news of the affair from the media. The voicemails show Edwards checked in from time to time from the campaign trail.

"I'm standing out in 18-degree temperatures to call you. And, please tell her I said hello and I will call you later tonight," says Edwards in one recording from December 26, 2007.

At the time, Young, Hunter and Young's wife were spending Christmas at the Aspen home of billionaire Texas trial lawyer Fred Baron.

1. Edwards is persona non grata. Newt is a presidential candidate.
Speaks volumes, doesn't it?

4. Elizabeth's cancer made this much worse than other adulterers

Had she not been sick, people would have looked past this too.

5. Edwards lack of morality was one of the most disappointing
events in politics for me. I was beginning to have the utmost respect for this man and was thinking he might be one of outstanding politicians for progressive leadership.

11. I always doubted him too.

He's a handsome, youthful-looking man, and his wife did not age as well as he did.. he had opportunity, and he probably cheated before too.

When their son died, they did have marital troubles (at least that's what I have read), and probably should have separated then.

Often, it's "the kids" that keep people together after the marriage has withered away. Having those two younger kids was probably an attempt to revitalize the marriage and to present him as a "Jack Kennedy-esque" candidate. People look back at having really young children in the White House, and he knew that.,

The sympathy for the lost son, and the charm of kids close to toddlerhood was to be his ace in the hole

Elizabeth's illness probably was the reason he could not leave, because it would have presented him as a cad..(He was, but the public didn't know it yet)..

The baby with Hunter, probably was a big surprise to him, because he was really caught in a vise when she came along. There was nothing for him to do but implode. Elizabeth was in a bind too, because she knew she was sicker than she let on, and she was stuck with him too, until she finally left him...probably because she was just tired of the whole thing and did not want to spend her last days with him.

I always got the impression that she had more drive to make him president than he had.. Maybe she wanted it for her kids..

I hope they have found some sort of peace..It will not be easy for them..

I don't care at all about him... He made the mess he's in, and it will dog him forever.

7. Move along.
This man is in no way newsworthy. He is beneath our contempt. Yes, I'm bitter--bitterly disappointed by the squandering of promise, and the almighty hubris.

8. For a public servant, the immorality of cheating on your wife...
is preferrable to the immorality displayed by our POTUS in turning his back on the poor and needy and embracing Republican ethics.
