PFC Manning Forced to Strip Naked
PFC Manning Forced to Strip Naked
Last night, PFC Manning was inexplicably stripped of all clothing by the Quantico Brig. He remained in his cell, naked, for the next seven hours. At 5:00 a.m., the Brig sounded the wake-up call for the detainees. At this point, PFC Manning was forced to stand naked at the front of his cell.

The Duty Brig Supervisor (DBS) arrived shortly after 5:00 a.m. When he arrived, PFC Manning was called to attention. The DBS walked through the facility to conduct his detainee count. Afterwards, PFC Manning was told to sit on his bed. About ten minutes later, a guard came to his cell to return his clothing.

This type of degrading treatment is inexcusable and without justification. It is an embarrassment to our military justice system and should not be tolerated. PFC Manning has been told that the same thing will happen to him again tonight. No other detainee at the Brig is forced to endure this type of isolation and humiliation.

3. How would we react and what would that treatment do
to each of us? Takes some empathy here.

It appears that they are not just holding him with intents to prosecute him. They are stripping him down mentally and breaking him into little pieces, slowly and methodically. From the reports I have read, this is deliberately punitive action on a person who accused, yet not tried and convicted. Psy-ops as black as the ace of spades?

That's below the lowest of the low and reprehensible. It sends a very ominous signal to those who stand for freedom and truth.

7. I doubt there was much reaction on Manning's part.
Having spent a good bit of time in a military brig (Marine) under solitary conditions, I can tell you that not much bothers you once you are incarcerated. They fuck with you all the time and it gets to be pretty much of a game.

I was in under, basically, the same conditions as Manning. They were trying to sweat me for information. I refused to speak for three months and they finally just gave up and released me. I think I was Court-Martialled after that, but my memory isn't completely clear on all of that crap. It was a long time ago.

80. New York Times:
First Lt. Brian Villiard, a Marine spokesman, said a brig duty supervisor had ordered Private Manning’s clothing taken from him. He said that the step was “not punitive” and that it was in accordance with brig rules, but he said that he was not allowed to say more.

“It would be inappropriate for me to explain it,” Lieutenant Villiard said. “I can confirm that it did happen, but I can’t explain it to you without violating the detainee’s privacy.”

If that is true, it adds an extra layer of abusiveness to this treatment to force him to strip in a largely hostile environment.

If anyone else did this to a gay person, we'd call it a hate crime.

Edited on Thu Mar-03-11 07:27 PM by AsahinaKimi
If he should die, without a court martial, in his cell of, say of Pneumonia or is starved to death, will anyone take action on this, or will the Military say "oops, our bad" while not really caring at all?

Can they be taken to task for this? Legally does anyone have a leg to stand on if they allow him to die?

27. I say Prove It.
Since the lawyer is making this claim, let him come forth with witnesses. Just like the government has to prove Manning guilty, his lawyer needs to prove this mis-treatment.

I find it incredibly funny that everyone buys this unconditionally, but have no problem saying that those making the accusations are lying (This case and the Assange case).

I think it's more likely that this laywer is going to make up any reason he can to get his client off, now that he's facing 22 new charges, one of which carries the possibility of the death sentence (which they are not persuing).

On what planet?

The outcry over Brad Manning's treatment already got one officer fired. I guess that was just the lawyer lying, too!

I say, thank you for your defense of indefensible punitive pre-trial detention. What would we do without people willing to sign off on anything.

36. If the glove don't fit...
OJ Simpson was aquitted wasn't he? The lawyers job is to get their client aquitted. I'm not willing to sign off on anything. I'm willing to sign off on something. That something is that Bradley Manning will face trial, and evidence will be presented to either convict or aquit. Since the lawyer is making such an outrageous claim, for his sake he damn well better have inarguable proof of the allegation. Call his witnesses. I bet he wasn't there during the time of the alleged stripping was he?

78. "Actually happening"
Edited on Thu Mar-03-11 10:14 PM by Hissyspit

66. More likely than not is isn't true
Even though this is UMCJ, this is typical pretrial tainting.

What is worse is that his legal team is using his sexual orientation in this campaign.

69. My question
Is why would the government allow such treatment knowning that the world is watching (lawyer already filed complaint about treatment), given that it could blow their case (a high profile case, at that)?

70. They wouldn't.
That is why this is fraud and I can't for the life of me figure out why so many have got sucked into it.

This is not real, people.

What in hell are you going on about?

No reason to say that, even before this confirmation:

First Lt. Brian Villiard, a Marine spokesman, said a brig duty supervisor had ordered Private Manning’s clothing taken from him. He said that the step was “not punitive” and that it was in accordance with brig rules, but he said that he was not allowed to say more.

82. No weeping here
The brig confirms, and indicates it was within brig rules. Question now is how is it within brig rules?

At any rate, there is no bail system under the UCMJ, and if his pre-trial confinement is found to be unlawful, he can motion for the illegality to be ended (I believe his attorney already did this), and receive credit toward his sentence. He could also file for redress of wrongs filed by a superior officer.

91. I would be willing to bet the rest of his life will involve prison activity
lifting, coughing, comes with federal lockup. He was effectively a dead (locked up forever) man when his conversation was posted on the web.

He has no chance. His id will be all over the files. they will be correlated to times and locations of access and thats it.

74. It is true, it has been confirmed.
And yes, the fact that Manning is gay is an issue in his punitive pre-trial detention.

89. Not really. The only issue is his actions. He confessed online.
I would assume a person has to log in and is video taped while using a secure system. His motives, his sexual orientation, and his favorite color are not relevant.

He will die in prison. Soon or an old man. That is the scope of his future.

96. Haven't you heard? Manning has been pre-convicted of horrendous crimes rendering him a non-person.

... or, "the military is allowed to do whatever it wants to people." Or,

"It's the "worst" case of "espionage" in history!!! (!!!). Or,

"So what, it's just being made to strip naked in front of others. You know, like football hazing. Just good fun. Or

"Solitary? Everyone needs some 'alone time', Or ... or ...

Or maybe our country, and in particular, our military, and in particular, our practices regarding prisoners in any way falling under the rubric of so-called "national security" has gone completely off the rails, and this will be regarded as the era in which America became, without any particular fanfare, a lawless security state in which anyone without sufficient economic clout can be rendered a non-person, with their rights stripped and their voices silenced, on the say-so of nameless, faceless, secret police, while our leaders make self-congratulatory speeches demanding the ouster of "barbaric" foreign leaders for doing that very thing.
