Matt Damon Joins The GROWING LIST Of Celebrities UNHAPPY With President Obama
Edited on Thu Mar-03-11 06:19 PM by Segami

:smoke: :smoke:

" Is President Obama losing support in Hollywood?

In an interview set to air tonight, actor Matt Damon tells CNN's Piers Morgan he's unhappy with the president. Asked point blank if he thinks the president has been doing a good job running the country, Damon simply replied, "No." "I really think he misinterpreted his mandate. A friend of mine said to me the other day, I thought it was a great line, 'I no longer hope for audacity,'" Damon said, referring to the title of Obama's political memoir. "He's doubled down on a lot of things, going back to education ... the idea that we're testing kids and we're tying teachers salaries to how kids are performing on tests, that kind of mechanized thinking has nothing to do with higher order. We're training them, not teaching them."

The criticisms count for more than standard-issue celebrity belly-aching, since Damon was one of Obama's earliest and best-known celebrity supporters during the 2008 presidential campaign. The actor and Oscar-winning screenwriter appeared at fundraisers for the Democratic candidate and hit the campaign trail on Obama's behalf.
This isn't the first time Damon has criticized Obama. Last year, the actor told reporters he was "disappointed" and "a little let down" by the president's leadership--but he was quick to add that Obama deserved more "time" to work on things. Apparently, Damon no longer feels that way.

And he's not the only one. Over the last year, a growing number of Hollywood types have publicly trashed the president's record on everything from gay rights to his failure to close a military detention center at Guantanamo Bay. In December, actress Barbra Streisand, a prominent Democratic donor, praised Obama as "cool" and "very smart" but told CNN's Larry King that she was unhappy that the president hadn't been more aggressive on certain issues. Streisand singled out his slow progress in overturning the "don't ask, don't tell" ban on gays serving openly in the military. "I would have liked to have him use his executive privilege … to get rid of something like 'don't ask, don't tell,'" she said. "I think people admire real strength, even though it's misguided, you know?"

Jane Lynch, of "Glee" fame, criticized Obama for the same thing, telling London's Guardian newspaper last year that Obama was a "huge disappointment" for his handling of gay rights. In an interview with Fox News last summer, Playboy founder Hugh Hefner said he was upset that Obama hadn't done more to end the war in Afghanistan. "We're going through the same thing as Vietnam right now," he said. "We can't please the world, and all we do is make enemies. We go in with the best possible intentions, but we make enemies."

When they express disappointment, well fuck them, they're just celebrities.

I don't believe I articulated a double standard in that post; I'm not convinced by the OP's apparent point that celebrities (as opposed to their money) move the needle among the Great Wad to any great degree...

80. The larger significance to this
is that they are vocalizing what a lot of the electorate think AND they have the big bucks to support the President in his next campaign.

These are some of his biggest and most vocal supporters, and they are turning. Publicly.

Obama has been a huge letdown. It could easily be argued that Obama is a war criminal for covering up the war-crimes of the Bush admin.

14. Obama is what is he was, a centrist
Anyone who thought differently wasn't paying attention or elevated him to messiah status.

Am I happy with every decision, no. Did I expect to be, no.

People should be more angry with themselves for their inflated expectations of a politician. Of course, I'm a hard core cynic so it's hard to disappoint me.

The oligarchs that control shit don't give a flying fuck about gay marriage, abortion, putting one liberal on the SCOTUS who is so outnumbered she can do nothing, ANY freaking social issues. They only care about money, how they can get it and keep you from getting it. The stupid wars, they are about MONEY.

When Obama has even the piddliest "win" in the money category, you let me know. In the meantime, for SHIT THAT MATTERS, Obama might as well be a Republican.

Obama has leapt to the service of the financial elite, and left his most ill-paid advisors to try to spin the policies of pissing on the fires of most concern to everyone who isn't a
Wall St. exec.

There's a reason the bail-outs looked the same under Obama as they had looked under W.... they were going to the same people... for the same contributions and loyalties.

The lack of any creativity in producing revenue streams is almost embarrassing...

Obama is just another politician, showing off his sharing of the same pre-conceptions as all the rest... the Tea Baggers might want to be rid of him, but Wall St. seems to have taken a plenty big fancy to him... explaining the reluctance of anyone to challenge his collaborator's ass.

I never said anyone wasn't entitled to their opinion, I just questioned its larger significance, since for some reason you have not seen fit to make clear, you seem convinced that Matt Damon is giving voice to untold scores of discontented plebs; as Matt Damon goes, so goeth the nation.

ETA: You could essay a counter that by my standards, my contributions here aren't significant either, and I would agree with it; I like posting here, but it's not significant political activity.

12. " Is President Obama losing support in Hollywood?" Well,
if it's that important what they think:

You know we’ve got problems when Barbra Streisand and Herbie Hancock understand the global economy better than John Boehner and Harry Reid.

Singer Streisand and jazz great Hancock were on hand for the Chinese president’s White House dinner last week, while House Speaker Boehner, Majority Leader Reid and Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell wimped out and stayed away.

<...>

108. I agree. It surprised me that Matt Damon was so knowledgeable
about the state of education in this country. He knows we are being scammed into allowing our kids to be tested instead of taught. I think his expression of disappointment in the president is the same for many of us. I was never thrilled with Arne or that NCLB still exists, but in the back of my mind I always hoped that Obama would take notice before it was too late. The greatest disappointment for me this past week was that I finally had to admit that Obama is right in there with Jeb Bush, et al. We are totally and completely screwed.

but, this one-liner as it relates to the educating of our children is one I will always remember, because it is so true: ..."We're training them, not teaching them."

Did you compare him to a nutcase like Nugent when he criticized Palin?

46. He is such a handsome man... He has a right to voice his opinion, but it's
not any more important than anyone else's opinion. The large audience and the attention entertainers get make it seem like their opinion is somehow more important than others who aren't famous. In some ways, I kind of wish entertainers would keep their politics to themselves, but I understand the lure to participate, especially when you have an international audience listening and you feel passionate about an issue.

49. Hollywood types are good at fundraising and giving candidates visibility.
Obama probably doesn't need the visibility now like he did in 2008, but he sure needs the money. Hollywood has been a generous contributor to many Democratic candidates and progressive causes.

Thanks to the Supremes, this election will be even more about $$$$$$ than usual.

Some corps who supported Dems in 2008 have backed off their support and returned to their usual Republican candidates.

Obama will have to get money from somewhere, and there are a lot of deep Democratic pockets in Hollywood.

Damon always comes across as a sharp guy (he's a couple of credits short of a bachelor's from Harvard if that means anything to anyone) and he has handled himself incredibly well throughout his career.

I'm not inclined to pay attention to celebrity opinions, but I'll listen to him as much as any other person who appears to be on the ball. And he gets on TV a lot more than the other sharp people I know.

Edited on Thu Mar-03-11 09:21 PM by Whisp
that's for sure.

didn't notice that about him before - I suppose because he has his scripts to read from.

but, wow.
really shouldn't be spotlighted if I were him.

---
he sounds a lot better when he's talking about things he knows about - his family, his career and things like that. Likeable guy.
but he should really stay away from politics, not his strong point at all.

55. "Ain't a wordsmith or a thinker"?
He has an Oscar on his mantel for co-writing Good Will Hunting. He narrated Inside Job, which he probably did for no fee at all or scale to help out the documentary makers.

"He should really stay away from politics, not his strong point at all."

He managed to raise quite a bit of money for the Obama campaign, did he not?

You might want to rethink your statements.

61. what I heard, is he stumbled and didn't make a whole lot of sense
was not clear in his message, when he was talking about obama/politics.

but when he spoke about things more personal, he is quite articulate and nice to listen to.

just an observation.

64. He wrote GoodWill Hunting, Which is about a very smart guy
and he played that very smart guy. And that very smart guy made references to Howard Zinn, saying "read People's History of the United States that book will blow your fucking mind" And Matt Damon used to be Zinn's neighbor. And Matt Damon also narrated the CD recording of People's History.

Therefore Matt Damon is to be respected ...

B-)

58. During the primaries, this place (and others) were gushing with praise

Still I do not see, either way, why so many would allow celebrities to sway their opinions.
