Have we prepared for this possible scenario on the Perry v. Schwarzenegger case? (gay marriage) |
|
The case is going to the Supreme Court next year or in 2013. That is a certainty.
We all assume that the Court will either compel states to legalize gay marriages or say the decision is up to each state.
But maybe not. Imagine with me that the Court might instead say that while states need not have legal gay marriage (unless they wish to do so), that states must offer the equivalent state benefits to gay couples as to married couples. In other words civil unions. Churches and clergies would be free to recognize or not recognize gay marriages.
Of course, that is Separate but Equal and not marriage, nor even desirable, but Court decisions are what they are and I could see the Court doing just that. The Court has been known to hand down compromise rulings on many hotly debated issues.

1. I believe that such a decision could be a huge step in the right direction. |
|
Then, in a few years, the optimal decision could be reached for FULL equal rights to marry!

4. I don't foresee anything good coming from this current court. |
|
Not that much good has ever come from the Supreme, with the exception of a twenty period.
