The RW on WI - this is from people I know, here is how they see the whole situation:
These two guys: One owns a business locally (friend 1) and the other is a vet:
(From facebook)

We find the labor unions and socialism in bed together at every turn, it seems.

Wisconsin Labor Protests and International Socialism
www.youtube.com
Union delegates, community organizers and socialist activists gather at the Wisconsin Capitol and strategize in a University of Wisconsin classroom. Christian Hartsock reporting.

Friend 1: Did you see at the end of the video, noodle boy accually practiced capitolism? There is still hope, though this video makes it seem like not much. The teachers in this clip are teaching our next generation. How bout we find some Russians wh...o lived under the USSR flag, and ask them how well socialism worked in their daily lives. Socialism has never worked on a grand scale. It does not take into account the human element. If the reward is the same no matter what, why would anyone strive for excelence? We all end up wearing the same suit and driving the same shitty car. Oh yea, we all end up in the same bread line too.

OP: (snip to remove personal info) A friend of my family's, around the same time, was a Holocaust survivor. For all those who seem to want to deny it today, I also distinctly remember him very passionately telling me his story, growing up in the camps, losing friends and family. He was a super-staunch supporter of this country, both as his saviour and as a beacon of freedom. He gave me a print of our Declaration of Independence and our Constitution that I still have today.

Remember, the Nazis were SOCIALISTS. Fascism is a different strand of communism is a different strand of socialism. They are all antithetical to freedom.

I took a few classes as an undegraduate in Eastern European history. In one of those we had a presentation by a professor who was there when the Soviets invaded his hometown with tanks and troops as part of their expansion in the 1950's. He told of how, as a little boy, he did not understand what was happening. He certainly did when he gave his presentation, though!

Another of my instructors while I was an undergrad, who also became a friend, had defected from Czechoslovakia. Among other things, she told me there was "freedom of religion," but you would find your church surrounded by KGB when you exited the service. They would take your name. Some people would never be seen again. She was afraid to go home to visit her family for fear she would never be seen again. She was afraid even to communicate with her family, for fear they would never be seen again. She also told me you were welcome to choose your own path in life, as long as it was approved by the State. How many dreams were destroyed? I distinctly remember tears in her eyes when she told me these things. I also distinctly remember tears in her eyes when I joined the Marine Corps.

Another of my friends from college escaped from VietNam as a kid. He was there after we left the south hanging and North VietNam rolled in. His family barely escaped. But, he was old enough to remember, and to realize that his home was destroyed, that he could never return, and that many of his friends or family who did not get out would ... well, never be seen again.

One of my interests, and an area I read and studied quite a bit then, was Soviet rule and international terrorism. At the time, for example, we KNEW the Soviets were sponsoring and funding a lot of the terror groups in play. Most were socialist groups active in Europe. Islamic terror was out there. It was known. But it was still in its infancy, compared to where it is today. These folks are in it for the long haul. I did not study terrorism in Latin America. I know it was active then. It just was not part of what I read.

I am sure others who may read this have similar accounts. I, for one, would be interested to read them if they choose to share.

My point, though, is that hose who lived under (or survived) the totalitarian regimes of the Soviets and the Nazis, and others, DO exist. They are out there. They have been in our schools to share their experiences. They do tell their stories. Some of us got the message. Some of us are infuriated that others seem to have forgotten, are ignorant, or actually believe our system needs to be replaced with these. This war of ideas has been fought over and over and over again in just this century. Every single time the other side, the socialist side, takes hold, it results in economic and cultural ruin to include murder and genocide.

For my part, I am stunned that we still entertain these dangerous fools as we do.

Friend 1: The socialist will use any tool, ethical or not to achieve their goals. Murder and mayhem are tools to them, the ends justify the means. My feeling on this is that they will do anything to attain and retain power. The people are of no consequience, just pawns to be lied to for support, and forgotten when power is attained. Every ounce of worth will be extracted. Thanks for the truth you speak. Remember, most of this country is here because our ancestors left Europe or elsewhere because of socialist tyrants.

I won't unfriend them because then I could not call them on it or torment them :)

6. Some of the things they say just shock me - they worship beck and rush
and never deviate from what they are told.

I try to have civil discourse with them. It usually ends up with 'you just think we should give everyone everything, you want to steal from us to give to bums, you hate America, etc' type of crap.

Bright spot though, more and more some friends seeing the exchanges are jumping in on my side and in some cases shutting down the stupid.

9. Yeah.. I generally just try to avoid that stuff when I'm there enjoying a smoke but...
I do occasionally get my zingers in.. one day a couple of them were talking about how Obama shouldn't be commander-in-chief since he never was in the military.. I just said "neither was Reagan".... the one guy stopped, and you could see the look of realization dawning on his face, then he smiled and tipped his beer to me as if to say "touche" lol.. twas priceless

2. Just thinking, questioning - are there any countries that have ever had what I would call
Edited on Thu Mar-03-11 11:04 PM by RKP5637
extreme capitalism, basically lack of regulation and minimal taxes. That seems to be what the republicans want, are there examples of countries ever having had this ... to me, it's possibly no? So, it seems we are really going off into severely uncharted areas if teabaggers, for example, ever were to have a majority.

BTW - your post was interesting to read!

11. Yep, I've always looked at labor unions as balancing things out in the work place. There
are many times I had wished I was in one, but there were none.
