10 Things Newt Gingrich DOESN'T Want YOU To Know ABOUT HIM

:smoke: :smoke:

" Today, former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich announced that he is taking steps to consider becoming the GOP nominee for president in 2012. As Gingrich begins the long process of possibly running for President, he is likely to take every effort to mold his image to make himself palatable to American voters. Yet the public deserves to know every important detail about the history of the man who may seek to be their leader. ThinkProgress has assembled a list of ten things Gingrich probably doesn’t want you to know about him:

1. DESPITE BATTLING THE “SECULAR SOCIALIST” AGENDA, GINGRICH CHEATED ON HIS WIVES SEVERAL TIMES: One of Gingrich’s main themes in his columns and speeches over the past few years has been the need to stop the “secular socialist” takeover of America, which he blames for the demise of the family. Yet he had several of these affairs while attacking President Bill Clinton for his own. He justified his hypocrisy to his second wife once, telling her, “It doesn’t matter what I do.”

2. WHILE DEMONIZING GOVERNMENT LARGESS, GINGRICH POURED MORE FEDERAL MONEY INTO HIS DISTRICT THAN ALMOST ANY OTHER: The politics of the mid-1990′s was marked by the right’s attempt to decimate the social safety net. As Gingrich waged his campaign to destroy unemployment insurance and aid for needy families, he made his own district the recipient of huge amounts of federal aid. Under Gingrich, his district in Cobb County, GA received more “federal subsidies than any suburban county in the country, with two exceptions: Arlington Virginia, effectively part of the Federal Government, and Brevard County Florida, the home of the Kennedy Space Center.”

3. IN 2007, GINGRICH BACKED CAP-AND-TRADE, THEN FLIP-FLOPPED TWO YEARS LATER: Talking to PBS just four years ago, Gingrich said, “I think if you have mandatory caps combined with a trading system, much like we did with sulfur, and if you have a tax-incentive program for investing in the solutions, then there’s a package that’s very, very good. And frankly, it’s something I would strongly support.” He even cut an ad with House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) warning of the dangers of climate change. Just two years later, Gingrich ended all of his green advocacy in favor pandering to far-right views on the environment. “Imposing stunningly high taxes on an economy in the middle of a recession is fundamentally wrong. … rtificially capping their economy is the wrong approach,” he said in testimony before Congress.

2. Didn't He Do Something Particularly Disgusting To One Of His Wives?
Like cheat on her while she was on her death bed? Or tell her the marriage was over by fax, or something like that? One or both of those might be Giulianni, but I know Newt did something pretty appalling to one of his wives.

9. While his first wife recovered in the hospital from cancer surgery, Newt would
visit her just to discuss the details of their divorce.

" Gingrich has been married three times. In 1962, he married Jackie Battley, his former high school geometry teacher, when he was 19 years old and she was 26.<85><86> They had two daughters. In the spring of 1980, Gingrich left Battley after having an affair with Marianne Ginther.<87><88> According to Battley, Gingrich visited her while she was in the hospital recovering from cancer surgery to discuss the details of their divorce. However, Gingrich disputes the account.<68> Six months after the divorce was final, Gingrich wed Ginther in 1981.<89><90>

In the mid-1990s, Gingrich began an affair with House of Representatives staffer Callista Bisek, who is 23 years his junior; they continued their affair during the Lewinsky scandal.<91> In 2000, Gingrich married Bisek shortly after his divorce from second wife Ginther. He and Callista currently live in McLean, Virginia.<92>

Gingrich has two daughters from his first marriage. Kathy Gingrich Lubbers is president of Gingrich Communications,<93> and Jackie Gingrich Cushman is an author, whose books include 5 Principles for a Successful Life, co-authored with Newt Gingrich.<94>

3. Item 7 on that list is alarming.
helped found a number of major businesses, including a for-profit health care firm called the “Center for Health Transformation” (CHT) and a communications firm called the “Gingrich Group.”

And he won't register as a lobbyist. Shouldn't that be illegal?

I smell conflicts of interest from every orifice of the man.

4. So Gingrich says he'll explore a run for Pres and the left is going to start smearing him?
Good! That douchnozzle deserves it. Besides it's not really smearing because it's all true.

What's that you say? Gingrich ran to his wife's hospital room to discuss their divorce while she was recovering from cancer surgery so that he could turn around and marry his mistress 6 months later?

I say we need a "Defense of Marriage From Assholes Like Newt Gingrich" law.

5. Couple problems with this list.
Point 1 is poorly worded. What does cheating have to do with secularism?

And points 4,5,7,8 & 10 are actually an asset for him with the right.

7. secularisum vs. religiosity
Particularily christian (sic) religiosity.

There is one commandment among the ten that would apply here.

As an aside, my favorite memory of protest during the Grinch controlled Congress.
I watched this unfold in real time on CSPAN. It was out of control. The look of terror and panic on the politicians' faces as the protestors circled the room...

School lunch protest cancels Gingrich speech
March 07, 1995|By Cox News Service
WASHINGTON -- House Speaker Newt Gingrich was forced to cancel a luncheon appearance before 2,500 county executives yesterday after hundreds of protesters burst through the doors of a hotel ballroom to decry changes in the school lunch program.

The well-orchestrated demonstration by ACORN, a grass-roots group that works for the poor and lower-wage workers, was the first major act of civil disobedience prompted by the Republicans' "Contract with America," and some observers said more could come. Republicans "talk about the angry white men, but the whole doggone universe is angry because the haves are kicking the have-nots in the butt," said Paul Mayhue, a county commissioner from Grand Rapids, Mich.

In an interview on Capitol Hill, Mr. Gingrich said the demonstrators were "tragically misinformed" and called the xTC protest "a bizarre way to try to blackmail the taxpayers by emotion and noise."
Mr. Gingrich said the GOP has increased money for the lunch program, but opponents argue that the increases are less than originally budgeted and that some states could run out of money.
Mr. Gingrich missed the protest event because his airplane from Georgia arrived late at Washington National Airport.

The speaker was scheduled to address the National Association of Counties at 12:30 p.m. The protesters, who gathered out of sight behind of the hotel, didn't hear the announcement that he would be a half-hour late.
At the original speaking time, they suddenly filed through the lobby, overwhelmed a hotel security team barring the ballroom doors, and marched down the center aisle waving school lunch trays and chanting "The people's voices shall rise again."
Finally, a voice crackled through a hotel security radio with a belated warning that protesters were coming in "by the hundreds," prompting a cheer from the demonstrators, who represented 31 states.
Most of the startled county commissioners remained seated as hotel waiters delivered plates of chicken, potatoes and vegetables. The head table was abandoned when demonstrators overran it and took over the microphone.

"They are going to cut taxes on the right and then take food out of the mouths of children. We have to speak out," said Johnnie Pugh, a protester from Arkansas.
When it was announced that Mr. Gingrich had canceled his appearance, the protesters left. "You are not our target," one organizer said.
But not all of the county officials were so understanding. David Huffman, sheriff of Catawba County, N.C., said simply: "They're a bunch of deadbeats."
