http://www.fbnewsleader.com/articles/2011/03/03/news/00newcountyprotestplan.txtThe Nassau County Commission considered Monday adopting a resolution to protest Gov. Rick Scott's plan to eliminate a drug monitoring program.
Scott has proposed the repeal of the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program, which helps prevent "doctor shopping" by providing a database that doctors and pharmacists can use to determine if a patient has purchased an excessive amount of prescription drugs or been to many doctors with the same complaint.
The development of the program was funded through grants and private donations. Its estimated operating cost this year is $500,000 - less than 1/1000th of the state's total budget. Nonetheless, Scott - a former healthcare executive - has targeted the program for elimination.
Senate President Mike Haridopolos and Attorney General Pam Bondi have both announced their opposition to the plan, and a Charlotte County resolution opposing it has been circulating to county governments throughout the state.
