"The Triangle Fire" is essential viewing... this is why unions are essential!
Edited on Fri Mar-04-11 07:00 AM by Puzzler
This was on PBS's "American Experience" a few days ago: a documentary about the robber barons and the rise of the garment workers' union 100 years ago in NYC. It took the deaths of 146 garment workers (mostly overworked young women) to fully sway public opinion in favor of labor reform. It can be viewed online here:

4. Thank you for the link.
I was in my early teens when I first heard this story, and it has haunted me ever since. That and my grandfather, who was a life-long union man, were probably the biggest influences in making me the life-long liberal I've become.

6. Good doc. What struck me as interesting was that *before* the fire....
Edited on Fri Mar-04-11 07:56 AM by Smarmie Doofus
... the Triangle workers had struck for better conditions and pay AND BEEN SUPPORTED by elements of the ruling class (e.g daughter of JP Morgan, I believe). Apparently the burgeoning women's rights movement found common cause w. garment workers over the "female" aspect. ( most of the workers were female.)

Later the upper-crust feminists jumped ship when shop talk turned to socialism.

Anyway, where are the modern day Robin Hoods, male or female, among the families of the modern day robber barrons?

When, if ever will they speak for us?

We watch. We wait.

7. It is such an excellent documentary.
I encourage everyone to watch it if possible. It's less than one hour.

8. Watched this last night
On my computer and was reminded of exactly why we need unions and safety regulations: given any alternative, business owners will do what's best for short-term profits and will not look out for their employees.
