On Thursday, the spokesman for Boehner, Michael Steel, said Buckles should be honored with a ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, rather than lie in state.
"Speaker Boehner and Senate Majority Leader Reid will ask Secretary Gates to allow Mr. Buckles’ family to use the amphitheater at Arlington cemetery for his memorial service – surrounded by honored veterans of every American war," Steel said.
Second District Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito released a statement saying she supported a ceremony at Arlington. (see below...)
She also said she will continue to work for a WWI memorial in Washington.
“A ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery would be a fitting tribute to Mr. Buckles' military service and the sacrifices he and his fellow ‘Doughboys’ made in World War I," Capito said. "I look forward to working with the Speaker and Senate Majority Leader on a veterans ceremony at the Capitol to honor our WW1 heroes including Frank Buckles as well as all American veterans in the near future."
Capito introduced a resolution earlier this week to allow Buckles to lie in state.
