California man dies after fall into meat grinder

Authorities were investigating the death Monday of a 72-year-old worker who fell into a meat-grinding machine at a processing plant.

The accident occurred at Central Valley Meat Co. in Kings County.

"Despite all safety precautions there was an unforeseen tragic accident at our plant," Brian Coelho, general manager of the plant, said in a prepared statement. "The circumstances are being fully investigated."

The company had no further comment.

Monday's fatal accident at a Hanford meat packing plant is the second major accident in recent months at the facility.

A Cal-OSHA spokeswoman tells KMJ that a 43-year old woman lost part of her arm in a December accident at the Central Valley Meat Company.

1. 72 years old and still working. Instead of retirement, he got the meat grinder.
that's fucking awful. That's what I'm fighting against. I don't know about anyone else.

3. Yep. This is the repub's dream of the future
Work until you die, preferably at slave wages. While the oligarchs laugh and get their high end medical treatments so that they can live forever.

15. I been reading a lot lately about
Edited on Sat Mar-05-11 07:52 AM by AsahinaKimi
many elderly people having falls when they reach that age. There was a booklet put out by some senior group (AARP?) to help people at home, find ways to make their home a safer place to be. To read about this guy, who should have retired..a long while ago, is horrible. I wonder if the company REALLY had safety precautions in place. This is the third accident there.

6. Ya , what does that really mean ?
He could draw SS but isn't ? ...or he is and still had to work ?

Or he never paid into SS and there is nothing to draw and has to work ?

Either way , it's all over now.

8. I think it means SS hasn't kept pace with inflation because the CPI is BS
but others disagree.

10. "Unforeseen"
Bullshit.

The only way it was "unforeseen" was that they just decided not to do a process hazard analysis like they should. Moving equipment? Sharp edges? Uh, yeah, you might want to put some safeguards in place. Their previous safety violations tell me that they just don't want to spend time or money fixing anything.

The fine for failure to properly lock out/tag out equipment ought to tell you, though, just how toothless the Republicans have made OSHA over the years. $1,100 for nearly killing someone is a joke of a fine, and I bet they still fought it in court.

13. Hey, sometimes you have to make sacrifices so that we can all have
super-cheap and readily available meat (of questionable quality) so that we can stuff our gullets with it 5 meals a day.
