(Retiring Mayor) Daley: "We're a country of whiners"

Daley: We're a 'country of whiners'

Retiring Mayor Richard Daley (giving way to Rahm Emanuel) contended today that America is a “country of whiners” that’s spent the last four decades fearing the impact of foreign governments on the nation’s economy instead of showing the confidence and sacrifice to lead on a global stage.
.....

“Now we’re whining about the Chinese and the Indians,” said Daley, who has cultivated Chinese leaders in an effort to make Chicago a tourism and business gateway to the United States. “We should have the confidence that we can compete with people if we all sacrifice a little bit for the common good. And, if we do that, we can compete with any nation.”
....

Saying he was pleased but not satisfied with the progress of Chicago Public Schools during his tenure, Daley recounted asking city teachers to spend 15 more minutes to teach to help disadvantaged students, but the union refused without additional pay.

“Our teachers work six hours a day. Six hours a day. What do you think of that? Thirty hours a week,” Daley said. “I’m not condemning all the teachers, but you know, there has to be a time and place for everybody to have to give to the less fortunate. … Unions have to understand, that you have a responsibility. It’s not just a paycheck.”

Daley wants everyone to love him as he leaves...

1. Then every teacher should stop taking work home
No more grading papers at night or on the train going home. No more putting up bulletin boards before classes start. No more phone calls to parents after hours. And certainly no more sponsorship of extracurricular activities.

Obviously, I'm being sarcastic, but someone needs to sit these fucking asshole politicians down and explain the facts of teaching life to them.

Daley, you're a slimy wanker.

5. It's called "Work to Rule"
And it is a job action that will be considered as these assaults on education continue...then they'll see what it looks like when teachers work 'only' 30 hours.

8. Fucking-A +a zillion
It's called basic math, you empowered, overbearing clowns. Factor in the hours we teachers put in outside of the time we actually have kids in the classroom and divide by our salaries. I make a paltry amount per hour, not that he'd notice.

17. That was my first thought, and I'm not a teacher.

What an incredibly stupid thing for him to say!

And, of course, he follows up, "we all need to make sacrifices," by citing an example where he believes workers (teachers) should sacrifice their time, not the wealthy sacrificing any of their money.

Bob Novak was 100% correct in labeling Daley, "only nominally a Democrat." If even Republicans call you a DINO, then you just might be a DINO.

2. Oooooh, Daley you shitpig. Just for that, you should be given a set of elephant balls.
“We should have the confidence that we can compete with people if we all sacrifice a little bit for the common good." "WE" meaning "NOT those who can readily AFFORD sacrifice. After all, we're the 'A' people who 'achieve'. You're the 'C' people who 'consume'. Asking ME to sacrifice would be what we like to call 'punishment'."

Teachers work 30 hours a week. What a delusional fuck this guy is.

11. Unbelievable!
When I was in the classroom, it was more than 6 hours, and then there was plenty of work to take home. What fucking planet does this nitwit live on?

3. It takes a whiner to know a whiner.
All the whiners I see seem to be among the corporate aristocracy and their handpicked puppets.

They are the ones complaining about teachers, complaining about deficit they created, complaining about middle class people getting a fair shake.

It's whiners like Daley who give a bad name to whiners.

13. I hate it when people who've not spent a single minute in the classroom
criticize teachers. I did it for 3 years and decided that the pay wasn't enough for the 60+ hours a week of blood, sweat, and tears. I have nothing but respect for anyone who does what I could not.
