Don’t Touch My Maid!

03-02-2011 by L. S. Carbonell

Tea Party, meet Reality. Reality, meet the Tea Party. After all the months of anti-immigration rhetoric on the right, after all the battles over Arizona’s “papers, please” law, Texas finally entered the fray, and prompted acknowledged the facts. Illegal immigrants do the work no red-blooded American wants to do.

State Representative Debbie Riddle, a Tea Party favorite, has introduced a bill that would imprison those who hire illegals for up to two years and levy a $10,000 fine on them, unless they illegal were hired for household chores – maids, gardeners, caretakers, nannies, cooks, etc. Why the exemption? According to Republican Rep. Aaron Pena, speaking with CNN, “When it comes to household employees or yard workers, it is extremely common for Texans to hire people who are likely to be undocumented workers. It is so common, it is overlooked.”

snip//

With the exemptions that Riddle wrote into the bill, Texas would only prosecute farmers and ranchers, contractors, food processors, and service companies like the floor cleaners that one Walmart hired a few years ago. Hitting farmers and ranchers would have far more impact on the Texas “economic engi” than going after nannies. Most farms hire migrants, which is an entry-level situation for illegals.

There are an estimated 11 million illegals in this country. The hate mongers have portrayed them as coming here to get on welfare and Social Security and live off the hard-working American taxpayer. This bill is the first acknowledgment by the right that illegals have become a necessary part of our economy, have always been a part of our economy and getting rid of them will not help our economy one bit.

1. Anybody want to bet that Debbie Riddle
either has now or recently had an undocumented "maids, gardeners, caretakers, nannies, or cooks"?

2. Mike Malloy really tore into "Debbie" last night.
Mike played the Anderson Cooper interview Riddle did last year when she claimed that women were coming into the country just to have babies that would then be trained as "American citizen terrorists".

He then discussed the above proposal and it was all the most hilarious thing I've heard in a long time!

I hope somebody posts it soon. He titled it " Debbie Does Dallas, Does Texas, Does CNN and Does Anderson Cooper!"

3. Love Malloy's title! Riddle's sense of entitlement is breathtaking, and
not in a good way.

4. I believe the statement that Americans won't do certain jobs
.... perpetuates a myth that drives down wages and worsens working conditions.

Americans work. As a teenager, I worked agricultural jobs in Arkansas. Those that worked around me were rural working class Americans. I saw their blood sometimes. It was red.

These jobs have been saturated with undocumented labor. To say Americans, "red-blooded" or otherwise, won't do these jobs is a lie.

11. I'm not that old ... not even close
Regardless, to continue to say Americans will not do certain jobs is to buy into a myth that helps keep wages low by forcing unfair competition for work by skilled and unskilled alike. Low wages only benefits Capital. It does not benefit Labor.

I also find it insulting as should most. It is calling Americans, as a group, lazy. We are not.

18. "Doing jobs Americans won't do" is a incomplete sentence.
The full sentence is "Doing jobs Americans won't do for less than the minimum wage, no benefits, no safety regulations etc. etc. etc."

8. I agree.
Many people may be "proud to be American," but that doesn't mean they are too proud to take a job others deem unworthy.

6. So if I understand her bill
There will be five classes of people, according to the teabaggers, in this country

Corporations
American patriots
Illegal immigrants
Semi-illegal immigrants (hired by the American patriots)
Liberal scum

21. But only the corporations and the patriots will be considered citizens
Citizens will have voting rights and prestige. It will be like the much lauded lost continent of Atlantis.

10. "It's so common. It's overlooked."
You betcha. I was once subjected to a dental hygienist from Texas bemoaning the fact that the "babysitters" she hired wanted so much money here in California. "Why in Texas they come over from Mexico and work for practically nothing!" she exclaimed.

12. It doesn't seem like that's an area you'd want to cut costs
When you let people in to your house, handle your food, watch your children that's a huge amount of trust you're putting on them.

Why not spend a couple of extra bucks to ensure they're legal and content?

but apparently some people would rather save a few bucks. And it's not like people who are hiring maids are starving.

One thing if we're talking about material goods. But your own child?

Oh well.

13. As a big election approaches, I may register here, but mainly I just lurk. I had to register to
mention that Aaron Pena, the former Democrat who betrayed his constituency to flip parties in order to give the Texas Republicans a super-majority in the statehouse, is a complete and untrammeled jackass.

That's all I wanted to say.
