Daley: We're a country of whiners
Source: WLS

March 4, 2011 (WHEATON, Ill.) (WLS) -- Chicago Mayor Richard Daley says we're "a country of whiners."

The mayor spoke to several hundred people at Wheaton College Thursday.

The visit was in support of the school's J. Dennis Hastert Center. Daley took some questions, including one about how to restore America.

"We have become a country of whiners, my theory. We started whining about the Japanese. 'The Japanese are gonna take us over.' You know, we thought we defeated them in the Second World War, rebuilt it, they're taking us over in 1970. 'What's going to happen to America? They're gonna own our country. That's it. We're all out of jobs,'" Daley said. "Then we start whining about the Mexicans. 'We're losing all the manufacturing to Mexico. Look what's taking place. We cannot compete. We can't do this, we can't do this.' Now, we forgot about the Mexicans. Now, we're whining about the Chinese and the Indians. We're a country of whiners. That's all we are. We should have enough confidence that we can compete with people if we all sacrifice a little bit for the common good. If we do that, we can compete with any nation."

1. Yeah, we were whining when jerks like you sent our jobs to countries that don't need to pay their
workers a minimum wage, supply safety standards in the workplace, and do not need to honor environmental concerns

I will stop whining when ass hats like you are the ones that are off-shored, and not the people who are foundation of the country

I just love this "if we all just sacrifice a bit" crap. The rich (including Daley) NEVER sacrifice.

14. Like Dickie Daley has EVER had to worry where his next meal was coming from
Nothing pisses me off more than assholes like Daley, who was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, telling the rest of America to quit bitching. FUCK that dickhead! He is a billboard for people that were born on third base and act like THEY hit a triple.

16. elsewhere in the speech, he whined about being unable to get teachers to work for free
:eyes:

http://newsblogs.chicagotribune.com/clout_st/2011/03/daley-were-a-country-of-whiners.html
Saying he was pleased but not satisfied with the progress of Chicago Public Schools during his tenure, Daley recounted asking city teachers to spend 15 more minutes to teach to help disadvantaged students, but the union refused without additional pay.

“Our teachers work six hours a day. Six hours a day. What do you think of that? Thirty hours a week,” Daley said. “I’m not condemning all the teachers, but you know, there has to be a time and place for everybody to have to give to the less fortunate. … Unions have to understand, that you have a responsibility. It’s not just a paycheck.”

25. Daley's wrong, but not completely.
Edited on Fri Mar-04-11 12:46 PM by Arkana
We're not so much a nation of whiners as we are a nation of thin-skinned, impatient nudniks.

Americans as a people want everything immediately, and if they don't get it they just vote the other guys into office. How do you explain the cyclical nature of the past 3-4 elections?

Jimmy Carter went on TV 30 years ago and gave us what the media dubbed the "malaise" speech, where he told us exactly what was wrong with us--and how did we repay this honest assessment of the American psyche? By voting him out for the happy-talking, jingoistic, Alzheimers-addled moron Reagan. Why? Because we don't like having our faults laid bare to us.

Daley's assessment is misguided, and he's the wrong person to give the talk--kinda like Rahm Emanuel lecturing the public on civil discourse. But Carter was not wrong to tell us what he did 30 years ago, and someone needs to do it again now.

E: Flame away, I'm expecting it anyway.

29. It's time for people like Daley to be stripped of all their assets and
thrown out onto the mean streets as an anonymous individual trying to get a job that pays enough to support a family. Today I was reading an elderly lady's obituary in the paper and it said she had been a homemaker all her life, devoting all her time to caring for her family and friends. Wonder if Mr. Daley remembers a time when 1 income would provide for a family's needs. Average people have been screwed over by politicians, trade agreements and corporations. That's not whining, it's fact.
