Mr. Frist, majority leader from 2002 through 2006, was joined at the event by family members and, in a rare Washington appearance, former President George W. Bush.Bill Frist, the former Senate majority leader, returned to the Capitol Wednesday for the unveiling of his official portrait with a supporting appearance by a man who helped Mr. Frist reach that leadership position – former President George W. Bush.
It was the president’s tacit support for Mr. Frist, a Tennessee heart transplant surgeon turned politician, that helped him move to the top of the Senate hierarchy during a 2002 uproar over racially charged remarks by Trent Lott, who was then leader.
“It takes a really good friend to get me to come back to Washington,’’ said Mr. Bush, who has been scarce around the Capitol since helicoptering away after the 2009 inauguration of Barack Obama. “I can assure you we are delighted to be here to watch you hang.”
Mr. Bush and current Senate leaders praised Mr. Frist as a lawmaker but also as a humanitarian who used his congressional recess breaks to fly to trouble spots around the world and provide medical care — missions that he has continued since deciding not to seek re-election in 2006.
