Saw a bumper sticker I liked on a Jeep in the parking lot |
|
When I went to the grocery store on my lunch hour:
"Unions -- the reason you have weekends"
I quickly scribbled off a little note on scrap of paper and put it on the person's windshield: "Thank you, your bumper sticker made my day. I'm glad some people "get it." We all have to stick together now and stand up for what is right. Have a good weekend yourself. Solidarity!" . When I came back out of the store, the Jeep was gone. I hope I made the driver smile.

4. Perhaps -- but what unions did work for was guaranteed time off that was regular and scheduled. |
|
Granted, even then it isn't a given. But unions worked for compensation so that if a person's hours aren't 8-5, M-F, they get something in return.

7. No problem -- as someone who worked Tuesday-Saturday in my union job, and as someone who is married |
|
to a BLE Teamster who has no set schedule and is basically on call 24/7/365, I know exactly what you're saying.
It wasn't clear to me if you were saying "unions are so crappy they can't even get weekends off for their own people!" or "unionized employees are so important and don't forget that you are probably reaping the benefits of the battles they went through, some of which some of them don't enjoy themselves." I see now it's the latter. Cheers! :toast:

9. You're not suggesting these folks get NO time off, are you? |
|

They may not have "weekends," but I was a Teamster and always had two days off a week. My cop friends also always get time off every week or are compensated for it. And though I can't speak for UMWA or UAW, I have a very hard time believing - as you seem to be insinuating - that these folks work seven days a week. Why do you insist that the "weekend" has to be Saturday/Sunday?
edited to add: typing at cross-purposes to other commenters. We all seem to more or less agree. Just don't get suck on the "weekend" meme. It's a small detail.

6. "Unions" include the people who make the Jeeps too, though. |
|
While this is seemingly obvious, we need public workers unions to reciprocate support, or the concept of "Solidarity" collapses.
