Conversation with clerk @ Walgreen's
I'm not sure how it started, but learned she had to come out of retirement because social security just wasn't enough to live on. I returned with we've got to stop what's going on in Wisconsin, Ohio, etc. because when they're done with unions, it'll be workers comp, social security, minimum wage and health & safety on the job. She looked at me and said that her son says the government is giving people on welfare, cars, gas cards and houses. I told her that son was watching too much Fox news. "That's not true?" she questioned, what hr son had stated. My answer "Duh".

8. Sounds like you passed up a teaching moment. Too bad, she might have learned something from you.

3. This isn't as weird as it may sound to you. My 78 year-old sister told me the other day that they
should stop the help to the unwed mothers who had boyfriends and lived near her in a HUD building. I asked her if she knew for sure if they were boyfriends or not as some might be family members that were down on their luck, and what would she do with the children in those apartments if they were taken from them? She said stop the men's welfare. I asked her if she knew how hard it is for anyone that is single to get welfare and she said she didn't know. I told her if there weren't any young children in the home then you don't get any help accept food stamps and about $150 a month where we live and that is only for a few months. I suggested a Work Program like we had in the 70's that helped my family out. It was called CETA and it worked very well! I think if we profess to be religious and follow the teaching's to help those in need we need to work to help those people out who need it and not to make it worse!

4. K&R- Back in the '80's, the accepted truth on the Right was that
people on welfare drove cadillacs and lived in idle luxury and of course were all minorities.I suppose most right ies don't know that the majority of people on welfare are white females with children, or those who are temporarily sick and/or unable to find a job.

We were on foodstamps after I had several heart attacks and bypass surgery and was unable to work for 7 months. We got a lot of nasty looks from various people when we were shopping, but were able to eat and pay our bills and keep our mortgage payments up.

There is so much meanness and greed and jealousy in this country today.

6. It seems to me that there is no one bothering to educate people
about the poor anymore. In the 60-70s we were thought of as unworthy of any help which by the way is a religious tenet held by churches that believe in double predestination - God love some hates others. At least back then some of the TV programs used to try to show what the situation really was. Not today. The poor are just those invisible unworthy who get blamed for everything. Well everything they can't blame on Obama.

Jerry Reed song, "When your hot, your hot".

Edit:
Checked it out. The song came out in 1971, the repugs used it in the eighties as a racist rallying call in the eighties.

9. How is that song racist?
It's dumb, sure, but it's not racist in any way.

10. Not the song. How the repugs translated the lyrics is racist.

14. It was the RW meme for the eighties. The cadillac welfare queen.
It was one of ronny's and norquist's favorite talking point.

12. So tell her to quit work and apply for welfare . . .
Free cars, gas, and housing seems a much better deal than sweating each day in a Walgreen's for minimum wage.

Sheesh. Some people. Too ignorant to understand when they're being conned, too stupid to see if the con is true they're a fool not to avail themselves of it.
