Huckabee: "Most single moms are very poor, uneducated, can't get a job"
http://mediamatters.org/blog/201103030034

Does this guy think he could ever get the votes of American women with this sort of talk?

Most single moms are very poor, uneducated, can't get a job, and if it weren't for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death and never have health care. And that's the story that we're not seeing, and it's unfortunate that we glorify and glamorize the idea of out of children wedlock.

If yes, then what can society through its agent federal government do?

If no, then We the People can ignore the issue.

http://www.elearners.com/projectworkingmom/quick-facts-on-single-moms-and-educational-attainment.asp

35% of all single parent female family households live in poverty

* 83% of single mothers have a high school diploma.
* 33% of single mothers have some college education.
* 16% of single mothers have a bachelor's degree or higher.

And we can't just ignore liars and right-wingnut hacks, right Jody?

50. Uh no...
Edited on Sat Mar-05-11 12:43 PM by notadmblnd
I have been a single mom for 7 years. My husband died. We were not poor. He took very good care of us in his death until the banksters and wall street stole it all from us. I was able to stop working at my 60k a year job and finish raising our son.

My son, who is bi-racial will graduate high school this year has decided to be a mechanic. He already has two certifications and is working on two more. He has never missed a meal, has always had a roof over his head, and for the most part had what he wants. He is not an angry young man, has never been arrested, nor in the two years he's been driving- had a ticket. He goes to school and to work (yes, he has a job at a local repair shop). He has a girlfriend, (he's known her since he was 8) and we've discussed the responsibilities of having an intimate relationship. They have been responsible and taken the appropriate actions (without my direct assistance) to prevent pregnancy and disease.

As a mother, I'm very proud of him. If his father were alive, I believe he would be proud of him too. And if fuckabee thinks that my son would have become a better human being if I had remarried... he is dead wrong and you are too- because I think it would have done just the opposite.

13. So...if that's the case, Huckleberry, why do you want to kick them further when
they're "already" down? What do you & your huckleberry fixed-news followers expect these single mothers to do when your species advocates taking away what little they are given just to scrape by?

You want them to carry their fetuses to full term, but once they're born, you deride them for not being able to care for them? Perhaps some of these children are mentally disabled due to incest & need government assistance? And an education would be out of the question because you & your ilk resent your taxes helping her to get a grant?

Remember this, Huckleberry, no rational parent would allow their child to starve, & if you & your huckleberry fixed-news followers have your way, these "uneducated" single moms will provide for their children however necessary. Is that what you want?

29. Huckabee is empowered by the polling on Southern conservatives
he won handily and followed it by praising Michelle Obama's food and health initiatives and saying that President Obama is a "family values" guy.

He is trying to make and end run around corralling the rightwing base (Palin, Newt) and showing the GOP/RNC that he CAN court the middle and make a run at Obama. They know full well that none of the likely candidates can do that.

He starts with the base of the "Party of the South" and adds that he can draw the middle.

They can sell anything (long list of marketed products) he is trying to show them that he is a Snuggie ripoff that can pull in some of the market. Put him on TV and have the talking heads sell him and he can win.

That is what he is doing.

33. Huckabee's (inaccurate) stereotyping
http://www.hearth2heart.com/2011/huckabee-single-moms/

So, we’re not seeing the story about how families that don’t fit your world view are worthy of contempt, Huckabee? No, that’s coming through loud and clear.

I have spoken before about how negative talk about teen moms is damaging & only helps to hold their heads under water. Huckabee’s comments about single mothers does not foster communication about the very real problems of poverty and class-divide in our country, it puts ALL of the blame of single-parenting on women while undermining the very uphill battle going on in houses all over the country.

You know the story we’re also not seeing? That Arkansas, in the years run by Huckabee, had the 4th highest rate of births to women ages 15-19 in the US.

Does Huckabee have any sort of plan to address his complaints against single moms? To give them the tools to raise themselves out of poverty? Or is this like abortions? Let’s rant, demean and picket, but not do one thing that actually lowers the number of unplanned pregnancies.

He’s just going to sit comfortably in his wealthy white privilege and spit on everyone.

Because that has clearly helped in the past.

We have very real problems with poverty in America. Spouting insulting stereotypes about single mothers isn’t going to help anyone except Mike Huckabee’s publisher.

34. Puhleeze. . .when was the last time this circus clown ever did
an honest day's work? I always love it when Republicans - particularly Republican officials - act as if they know anything about everyday life. Most of them grabbed at every brass ring in sight - and if they could get away with it, took the brass ring out of someone else's hand.

You know they don't know anything about hard work - look at the way Boehner goes on and on about having to work in his daddy's bar. . .without even thinking that many people don't have a daddy with a business to hand a job to their son. And while bar work isn't necessarily easy, he didn't exactly do a stint wiping butts at a nursing home for minimum wage.

lawyers, etc, have children without husbands and they are doing fine financially. They all aren't destined to poverty.

Yes, having a baby before finishing education causes a lot of young moms to fall behind, but he shouldn't generalize like this. A lot of women are choosing motherhood without husbands.

And the ones who're on "government assistance" (like you aren't?) are on it for a reason. That reason would be a misogynist, materialist society that marginalizes all women and their children, unmarried or not.

45. Related misstatement by the Huckster (Feb 25)
http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2011/02/huckabee-poverty-will-fall-if-single-parents-just-get-married.php

Do you realize in America, we have a $300 billion a year dad deficit in America," he said. "If we talk about poverty, two-thirds of poverty in this country disappear if the mothers of children marry the fathers of those kids."

That claim by Huckabee, a popular right wing memo promoted by former President George W. Bush and more recently by the Heritage Foundation's Robert Rector, does not appear to be supported by the data.

In a government report http://www.mathematica-mpr.com/publications/pdfs/family_support/BSF_impact_finalrpt.pdf">released last year, marriage (and programs promoting it) did not lead to a decrease in poverty, especially among single mothers. The study from May 2010 on the marriage promotion programs promoted by the previous administration found they had "no effect on family economic well-being"
