Spent some time on a RW forum. IN APPRECIATION OF DU MEN!!

Was posting a bit on a conservative forum and realized how spoiled I am but the real, intelligent, GROWN-UP men here at DU. Answers to polite political posts were invariably were of the classic sexist pig variety.

Example in a thread concerning the evangelical vote and Newt Gingrich:

Just FYI, yelling "Oh Gawd" when you're being intimate with your poodle doesn't count as prayer.

And seriously there were like a dozen answers just that juvenile re: every thread I posted in. Tellingly, I got some PMs from women on the forum saying they felt just awful about it but "all forums are like that" and "there's nothing you can do about it."

I informed one that I am used to the caliber of men on DU and so don't really run into that kind of thing. So if she wanted to express her opinion without demeaning remarks from knuckle-dragging sexists, , she should consider becoming a Dem, LOL! Other than that I don't know what to tell her.

It was a great experience attempting to converse with these people because it reinforced everything I thought about THEM and US. And made me so appreciative of everyone on DU, especially the GROWN UP MEN who don't hate and demean women!

That comment was really offensive. Kinda funny when I re-read it, but offensive because of what the poster meant by it.

What bothers me the most is that the women PM you to tell you they felt awful, but they do not have the intestinal fortitude to post it for the world to see. If something said is out of line, they should call them on it. Speaking of that, I guess we can also thank the mods for the civility here. That comment would not be there for long on DU.

I've been hurt by women, but I know better than to think that women are any more or less wicked, irresponsible, petty, or vindictive than men are.

Humans can be nasty to each-other. I've found the major determiner to be basic maturity and civility vs. small-mindedness and selfishness.

You've done very well. Don't stop letting these gals know that they don't have to be treated the way they are. Hopefully, one day, the system will achieve balance, and the good 'guys' won't suffer the fallout of the assholes that give us all a bad name.

14. For the most part I agree

Until I see a thread about Sarah Palin. Law of DU seems to be that everytime SP or any conservative woman is mentioned, there have to be at least four or five replies implying a relation of the woman to a legendary winged spirit or a feminine canine.

Admittedly, we're better than most other places out there, but our shit can still stink sometimes. :)

There is a gray area where some people will be offended and some won't be. Of course, I didn't see the whole context of the Gingrich discussion. Also, there's a level of friendly insult that one could engage in with friends but that becomes much more questionable with strangers or casual acquaintances.
