NEW YORK (AP) — A top associate to billionaire real estate developer Donald Trump is heading to Iowa next week to promote a potential presidential bid by Trump, who has said he would campaign in the state if he decides to seek the Republican nomination.

Michael Cohen, a vice president and counsel to the Trump Organization, told The Associated Press that he planned to fly to Des Moines, Iowa, on Monday to meet with top GOP lawmakers, operatives and volunteers. Iowa is to host the first presidential caucus, scheduled for Feb. 6, 2012.

“I'll be gauging the reception I feel he would have when he comes to Iowa,” Cohen said.

Trump told reporters in Iowa this week that he would campaign hard in the state if he decides to enter the GOP field.

1. Welcome to Iowa, Mr. Trump. By the way, you're fired.

2. I think the people of Iowa would see through him
very quickly.

My youngest daughter went to school there and lived there for awhile. We found Iowans very down to earth, but extremely well-informed politically. They are proud of their caucus system, and their early spot in the primary season. Iowans are too smart to fall for Trump.

6. I promise you he isn't running.
For one thing, Trump would have to make extensive financial disclosures. He doesn't want that. And he doesn't want that because he's worth less than he says he is. The reason he can get commercial bank loans is his illusion of being a billionaire. When he has to publicly disclose that he's a millionaire, it can only have a negative impact on his business in the future, not to mention his reputation.

Next, Trump is using the excuse of running for president as free public relations. He can get in the paper with his little snippets of pomposity and hope to solicit future business.

Finally, Trump doesn't undertake endeavors that he can't win. He doesn't do well with competition who can beat him. He isn't a happy also-ran.
