Although the new federal health care law won’t take full effect until 2014, it’s already paying dividends for the City of Omaha.
The city received $1.26 million this week for participating in the Employee Retiree Reinsurance Program, said Richard O’Gara, human resources director.
The payment will offset some of the health care costs incurred by early retirees between June 1 and Sept. 30.
The program is funded through $5 billion set aside in the Affordable Care Act to encourage public and private entities to continue retiree health coverage for those between 55 and 65.
The city submitted its application in June and was among the first 1,000 approved, but it’s not the only Nebraska organization involved.
