Vote will turn off Modesto street lights

MODESTO, CA - It's not often voters decide to make an area potentially more dangerous, but that's happened in Modesto within the North McHenry Lighting District.

Property owners voted down a tax increase that would have closed a $25,000 deficit and kept street lights on. So if the Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors approves that vote, the lights will start going off soon.

"Our revenues are not matching our expenditures," said Public Works Director Matt Machado. "They're (lights) not on a switch; they're actually hard-wired. The utility company will have to go out and disconnect and that will take some time."

Even though there are very few homes in the lighting district, people who work in the many businesses there were concerned that darker streets will become more dangerous streets.
