Question about signing multiple petitions
I wasn't sure which forum to put this in, so I put it here, hoping it gets enough attention for someone who knows the answer to reply.

I'm sure many of us get the same petition-donation websites. Credo, Care2 action, Democracy for America, Human Rights Campaign, Defenders of Wildlife, Greenpeace, Union of Concerned Scientists, VoteVets, Bold Progressives, etc., etc. I pretty much sign them all and donate what little I can. But I started thinking, what if they check signatures, and dismiss some very worthy causes due to duplicate signatures? I don't remember everything I sign; only one site that I know of will tell me, "You've already signed this petition." Also, I'm sure I've signed for the same things for, e.g., Greenpeace, Defenders of Wildlife, ASPCA, the Humane Society.

Anybody know anything about this?

2. To be honest
Very few online petitions really mean anything.

12. yeah
Not sure my vote counts either with the paperless Diebold machine thang, but I still go through that motion too.

Do I have a sign on my back or what? I don't post a lot, but my very first post here got some kind of meanie response. Seeing "message deleted by mod" and here lies a disruptor, etc., is more disturbing to my overactive mind than to actually see what the response was!

Thanks for those who gave real responses. I was thinking more along the lines of "Tell your congressman to repeal DOMA" rather than signatures to elect somebody. But just in case, I will be more careful about remembering what I've signed.

3. Here's what I know
Individual sites check for dupes. Combined sites "may" check for dupes when presenting a petition, but I doubt it. The only time a dupe would really do harm is if it is on a petition for legal action, usually on the local level. That requires no dupes and registered voters in the proper county/state. These other petitions are simply a show of support for individual causes and have no legal binding, which means you can support Green Peace to save the whales as well as The Sierra Club (assuming Sierra Club saves whales).

6. It is harmful to sign multiple petitions for a recall or some other legally binding petition
Only one of your signatures count. If the organization collecting signatures does not catch your multiple signatures, they could find themselves short on signatures checked by the organization they are petitioning when they thought that they had enough. Their petition will fail.
This happened to a would be candidate in my home area.
