Obama offers deeper cuts, appeals for budget deal
By Erica Werner, Associated Press

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama says he's willing to make deeper spending cuts if Congress can compromise on a budget deal that would end the threat of a government shutdown.

Obama's appeal for common ground came Saturday in his weekly radio and Internet address, but lacked specifics on how to bridge the $50 billion gulf that divides the White House and Democratic budget proposal from the deeper reductions offered by Republicans.

The competing plans are headed for test votes in the Senate in the coming week; neither is expected to survive, setting the stage for further negotiations. The government is running on a temporary spending bill that expires March 18, so the parties have until then to come up with a plan to pay for the remainder of the budget year through September.

"We need to come together, Democrats and Republicans, around a long-term budget that sacrifices wasteful spending without sacrificing the job-creating investments in our future," Obama said. "My administration has already put forward specific cuts that meet congressional Republicans halfway. And I'm prepared to do more," said Obama...

2. There's always the poor.
You can probably squeeze a few more bucks out of them. Or end the wars, or I understand the wealthy and the corporations are doing good. Maybe they could be tapped a little.

3. Anyone see the Onion News last night?
Where the real Barack Obama had been kidnapped right after the inauguration and hidden away for the last two years, while the "phony Obama" enacted all these policies that were totally counter to what he'd campaigned on? When the "real Obama" was discovered and released, he immediately began to undo all the damage the "phony Obama" had done. Got a good laugh out of it, but now, sadly, I'm wondering if the "real Obama" isn't still out there somewhere and this guy we keep seeing/hearing is the imposter who continues to do the bidding of his corporate masters, "preparing to do more cuts". RIF just went bye-bye...Lord knows what's next.

Peace and blessings. We sure need 'em!

4. More "shared sacrifice," no doubt.
Tax cuts and deregulation for the Kochs, cut heating aid to the poor and break the unions.

Yeah, that sounds "shared."

9. He's met them halfway and is willing to do more??????
WTF???

Why do we have to give more? We control the Senate and have the presidency (sort of) and the repubs get more???

Their party gave us this deficit that no one cared about until bush was out of office! THEY need to reverse THEIR policies that put us here...tax cuts for the rich...unending spending for wars!

16. Damn...I want to play Poker with this guy.
I would own the White House before sundown.
Most of the time, it looks like he is Playing to Lose.
(a valuable skill if you occasionally play Poker with your Boss or Customers.)
