Massive protests held against US role in Afghanistan

KABUL, March 6 (Xinhua) -- Hundreds of Afghans held a massive protest against the United States in the downtown area of Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, on Sunday, demanding an end of the U.S. role in Afghanistan.

Holding banners "Permanent US military bases equals permanent slavery of Afghan people", "Occupation equals killing plus destruction" in their hands, the protesters shouted "Death to America" as they marched on the downtown street.

"The involvement of the US government in Afghanistan, that has a long history of cruelty, has not improved conditions in the country, but increased corruption, poverty, murders, poppy cultivation and trafficking," says the pamphlet handed out by the Solidarity Party of Afghanistan, the organizer of the protests.

Hangama, one of the organizers, told Xinhua, "Our aim is to condemn the civilian casualties caused by U.S. troops here in Afghanistan and we don't want the American presence in our country. "

Amnesty International says a blogger and human rights activist has been detained incommunicado in Qatar and is at risk of torture or other ill-treatment.

The UK-based human rights group said Sultan al-Khalaifi was arrested on March 2 by around eight individuals in plain clothes, believed to be members of the security forces.

According to information received by Amnesty International, al-Khalaifi had told his wife earlier that day that state security had contacted him, asking him to report to them, but that he did not know why.

The reasons for his detentions and his whereabouts are unknown, Amnesty said in a statement on Friday, adding that it is believed he is being held in the custody of state security.

Britain trains 100 members of Gaddafi's feared police
More than 100 officers from Colonel Gaddafi's feared police force are currently in Britain to undergo training in advanced techniques.

Huddersfield University accepted 103 Libyan police officers on a master's degree course which began near the end of 2010

By David Barrett and Rebecca Lefort 8:00AM GMT 06 Mar 2011

The group, including a brigadier and a major, are learning forensic skills at Huddersfield University in West Yorkshire. Many have brought their families to live with them in the UK while they study.

...

The arrangement is likely to prove controversial because of strong feelings among British police over Gaddafi's refusal to hand over the killer of Pc Yvonne Fletcher, the Metropolitan Police officer who was shot dead outside Libya's London embassy in 1984.

...

The university is one of a number of British organisations which struck deals to train Libyan officials following the landmark 2004 "tent in the desert" summit between Tony Blair, the then prime minister, and Colonel Gaddafi.

...

As part of their 18-month course in Huddersfield, the Libyan officers will also receive training from a private company headed by a former Met Commissioner.

MANAMA-thousands of residents of Bahrain have Sunday in Manama in light pink Palace, where Sundays normally Parliament sits, argued against King Hamad bin Isa al-Khalifa. The present police handle.

EPA since 14 February in the Kingdom argued against the Government. The mainly Shiite opposition began with demonstrations for political reforms. Especially young people, also argued against high unemployment and poor living conditions. Just over a week ago in the capital Manama tens of thousands of people onto the streets were mainly Shiites who complain about discrimination by the Sunni elite. (REUTERS)

15:48 BBC Volleys of gunfire are still hammering around Tripoli, says the BBC’s Jeremy Bowen there. But he says there are questions being asked in Tripoli about the thousands of rounds that have been fired today. “Now, in daylight, it’s clear that it is coming from Gaddafi supporters… But before dawn it sounded different, more like a fight. That’s how it sounded. Different sorts of guns appeared to be exchanging fire. And later on, a Libyan man came up to me to say that there had been some sort of shootout going on, and the mass firing in the air and the celebrations had been started to cover it up.”

I wrote a paper on it in college (I lived with stacks of news clippings and volumes of Congressional testimony about it for a time) and I did a congressional internship in D.C. at the beginning of the Carter Administration.

It's our loss that Carter's plan was dropped as soon as he left office.

(I also remember waiting in gas lines in those days, and restrictions on who could get gas on which days in my state. It's possible that we may see that 'blast from the past' revisiting us again.)

We've lived in 'interesting times,' as the saying (or curse, or blessing) goes.

I'd guess, though, that, like me, you wouldn't trade that experience of living through those times for a billion bucks. And, in addition to everything else, we'll always have rock 'n' roll. :)

Libya’s Devil in female form
Posted on March 6, 2011 by s0urce

‘Huda the executioner’ – Libya’s devil in female form
How pulling on a hanging man’s legs made Huda Ben Amer one of Colonel Gaddafi’s most trusted elite.

When Colonel Gaddafi hanged his first political opponent in Benghazi’s basketball stadium, thousands of schoolchildren and students were rounded up to watch a carefully choreographed, sadistic display of the regime’s version of justice. They had been told they would see the trial of one of the Colonel’s enemies.

But instead a gallows was dramatically produced as the condemned man knelt in the middle of the basketball court, weeping and asking for his mother, hands bound behind his back.

The crowd, many of them children, cried and yelled out “No, no” or called on God to help them as they realised what was about to happen. Two young men bravely ran up to the revolutionary judges and begged them for mercy.

The worst moment came right at the end, as the hanged man kicked and writhed on the gallows. A determined-looking young woman stepped forward, grabbed him by the legs, and pulled hard on his body until the struggling stopped.

Rebel forces very nervous after air strikes, meeting resistance from pro-G forces along the way, rebels seemed forced back to Ras Lanuf again to get more ammunition, have heavy weaponry and more people who look like professional soldiers.

March 6, 2011

...

They have been told – and seem to believe without question – that his forces have scored important victories. One of the government spokesmen said Zawiya, Misrata and Ras Lanuf had been recaptured from rebels, and that Col Gaddafi’s forces were advancing on Benghazi, the epicentre of the rebellion.

...

They believe him, without any doubt, when he says that the trouble in Libya is being caused by al-Qaeda and its dupes, and by foreigners who want the country’s oil.

...

But as the morning went, a different version of events began to emerge. BBC journalists in Ras Lanuf reported that Col Gaddafi’s forces had not captured the town.

...

And there are questions being asked in Tripoli about the thousands of rounds that have been fired today.

...
