Walker's budget could be major setback for state's Democratic Party

Of the nearly $7 million labor unions have contributed to state candidates in Wisconsin over the last six election cycles, 93 cents of every dollar has gone to a Democrat. Among educators, it's 75 cents of every buck. For public employees, 73 cents. The data compiled by the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign for the State Journal starkly illustrate why the high-stakes battle between Republican Gov. Scott Walker and labor unions over the last three weeks is about more than budget shortfalls and bargaining.

"I consider organized labor to be the backbone of the Democratic Party," said Mike Tate, state party chairman. "Part of Scott Walker's strategy is to weaken the infrastructure of the Democratic Party. "Walker has proposed eliminating most collective bargaining for most public workers, including state and local government employees, and teachers.

His plan — approved by the Assembly but stalled in the Senate — also would make it harder for public unions to collect dues, require unions to hold annual certification elections and impose a host of other measures that unions and labor experts said would cripple public unions and potentially render them useless.

Walker and other Wisconsin Republicans won't acknowledge a motivation other than to help the state close a $137 million budget deficit in the current fiscal year and a projected $3.6 billion gap over the next two years. However, conservatives have long complained about the ties between public employee unions and Democrats.

This is the real story behind the story: Kill the Democratic party.

1. To me, once this started there was never any doubt
It is a far reaching, coordinated effort.

How did Democrats in politics NOT know this was happening, THAT is what I wonder about.

It is up to us now. People like you and I, who come to these sites to learn because we care. We are the ones who need to educate people and get them to the polls.

One thing the GOP does not have no matter how much money they throw at politics, is the NUMBERS. When democrats vote, we win. It IS possible to turn all this around in 2012 but it is going to depend on US.

There is not a better time than now to begin. People are waking up to the damage the GOP is already doing and see what they are planning for the future. Not only should we be speaking to democrats, but now is the time to have that conversation with the independents and even (shudder) conservatives.

I have already helped one independent leaning conservative change parties since Wisconsin. If every solid democrat/liberal/progressive spoke the truth to just ONE conservative or independent or undecided, can you imagine how our numbers would swell?

The future looks really really good in the GOP world - for the rich and for the judgmental. For the poor, old, and sick - well our world isn't looking very bright right now. We need to change that.
