Are Wisconsin Republicans preparing to break with Walker?
By Greg Sargent
I don't know if these reports are true or not, and we should treat them with caution. But we now have two news outlets, one local and one national, claiming GOP defections from Governor Scott Walker may be in the works. The Wall Street Journal reports:

Conservatives in Wisconsin are getting nervous that three Republican state senators may defect on the collective-bargaining reform vote. It's still anyone's guess as to when that vote will take place because Democrats remain in exile to prevent the necessary quorum. But Republicans in the Senate hold a 19-14 majority, so GOP Gov. Scott Walker can afford to lose no more than two Republican senators on this pivotal vote.

On Wednesday, Republicans held a "unity" press conference that was attended by all but one senator, Dale Schultz. But a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll showing that 62% of respondents oppose curtailing collective-bargaining rights for public-sector workers over health care, pensions or other benefits suggests that the GOP position may be losing some support among independent voters.

Separately, WEAU, an NBC affiliate in Wisconsin, reports that "four moderate Republicans are wavering and could break with the GOP and vote against Walker's budget repair bill."

1. The fucking assholes see their recalls coming if they don't.
Self-serving, as always.

I hope this is true, but it would be nice to see them recalled anyway.

2. K & R for defecation!
Here's hoping that's exactly what the entire legislature does on this specious bill.

3. Speaking of defecation
There was a pile of 'stuff' (could've been dog poo or just mud) on the street at the Capitol as the marchers were making the rounds. Someone had stuck a sign on it that said "Walker's Budget Bill". I should've taken a picture.

They'll publicly claim that they've changed there minds/votes.

The Dem Senators in exile return, the chamber doors are locked, and the 2-3 "turn coats" have another change of heart and vote in favor of Walkers bill.

15. That would make them look really bad
The Republicans that would publically announce that they would vote against the bill would be Republicans who have had many constituents communicate that they are against it. Not actually voting against it would greatly encourage recall measures against them.

13. That's GOOD news.
Whether the defecate or defect, if they won't vote for the bill, the Dems can return, the bill can be defeated, and WI can move forward.

Isn't that the point of demonstrating, boycotting, etc.? To cause those in power to change their minds?

14. Point of demonstrating?
Well, that's one of several possible points. Another might be to educate people, give them a sense of personal efficacy, and change who's in power.

17. All of those are good.
What's the most likely outcome (outside of Walker and the Republicans winning?)

Is it likely that Walker will step down, give up, or walk away? Or more likely that Republicans will get nervous, and lose the number of votes they need to pass the bill?

Changing who is in power is the long-term goal. Defeating this bill is a short-term, but crucial goal, as well.
