UPDATE 7-Libyan rebels fight artillery duel with army
Sun Mar 6, 2011 4:17pm GMT

UPDATE 6-Libyan rebels regroup and advance on Bin Jawad

* Rebel forces return to Bin Jawad after ambush

* "We have our brothers in Sirte," rebel commander says

* Civilian casualties in ambush

(Recasts with rebels advancing, changes dateline)

ROAD TO BIN JAWAD, Libya, March 6 (Reuters) - Rebels in east Libya regrouped on Sunday and advanced on Bin Jawad after forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi ambushed rebel fighters and ejected them from the town earlier in the day.

"We are just outside Bin Jawad. There are thuds of mortars landing near rebel positions, leaving puffs of smoke, and also the sound of heavy machineguns in the distance," Reuters correspondent Mohammed Abbas said by telephone.

"There's a steady stream of rebels heading back west towards Bin Jawad," he said. The town is on the road to Gaddafi's hometown of Sirte, which the rebels intend to attack.

Rebels captured Bin Jawad, 160 km (100 miles) from Sirte, on Saturday but withdrew, which let army units occupy houses and mount an ambush that forced rebels back to Ras Lanuf.

24. Libya forces fight rebels advancing toward capital
Libya forces fight rebels advancing toward capital

By PAUL SCHEMM and MAGGIE MICHAEL, Associated Press Paul Schemm And Maggie Michael, Associated Press – 1 hr 23 mins ago
BIN JAWWAD, Libya – Libyan helicopter gunships fired on a rebel force advancing west toward the capital along the Mediterranean coastline Sunday and forces loyal to leader Moammar Gadhafi fought intense ground battles with the rival fighters.

The opposition force pushed out of the rebel-held eastern half of Libya late last week for the first time and has been cutting a path west toward Tripoli. On the way, they secured control of two important oil ports at Brega and Ras Lanouf and by Sunday, the rebels were advancing farther west when they were hit by the helicopter fire and confrontations with ground forces.

The uprising against Gadhafi, which began just days after President Hosni Mubarak was ousted by protesters in neighboring Egypt, has been sliding rapidly toward civil war, making it the bloodiest episode in the Middle East's wave of unrest.

The seesawing battles for towns and oil installations along the coastline signaled that Libya's fighting could be prolonged, compared with the ousting of Mubarak after just 18 days. The protesters-turned-rebels — backed by mutinous army units and armed with weaponry seized from storehouses — are going on the offensive to try to topple Gadhafi's 41-year-old regime. At the same time, pro-Gadhafi forces have conducted counteroffensives to try to retake the oil port of Brega and the rebel-held city of Zawiya west of Tripoli — where bloody street battles were reported over the weekend.

Freedom Fighters are now "rivals" -- and more of the "Civil War" BS --

Libyans are fighting to take back their country from a dictator who has controlled their

country for more than 40 years in a brutal regime of torture.

62. yes, I notice the use of 'Civil War' picking up on Qaddafi's
threat rather than listening to the people. Qaddafi's army of foreign mercs hardly qualifies as the other side in a Civil War.

These people are so incredibly brave. I wish it would end soon, but it looks like Qaddafi is not going to stop until someone stops him.

Amazing to see how far they have advanced -- very close to Gaddafi now --

They have been so right so far along -- trying to free the prisons -- trying to

get the documents -- shutting down the SS and worrying about what to eventually do

with 100,000 of them employed to do this filthy work.

Also worry that they will take up with other Gaddafi thugs --

The underground systems of places for Gaddifi to hide and survive --

The underground prisons and people buried alive -- complex systems.

And always more mercenaries! And bombing!

Edited on Sun Mar-06-11 12:30 PM by JanDutchy
Yesterday a dutch report on TV reported on the conditions in Benghazi.
Because in the local hospital a lot of personel from the Philipines worked in that hospital, who are evacuated. The hospital is in the need - because of this 'nurse-drain' - for volunteers and people who want to work in the hospital.

A plan should be made, so that the young people - also man - will learn the job in hospital care.

So Libya will and can also be at that front independent.

Doctors Without Borders went but I think most of them are stuck at the border.

One doctor who made it to Benghazi said he spent over $5000 in bribes getting through all the state controlled checkpoints.

Says there's something going on and #G is trying to cover something up with all those fireworks. The gunfire was extremely heavy, not celebratory and not sporadic like the last 5 days.

"there is something going on, and they are trying to cover it up."

6:25pm: Al Jazeera Arabic reports that Gaddafi has called for an UN or AU inquiry “to review the Libyan situation” and suggested that France could lead the committee. He also renewed his accusation of the Libyan protesters taking hallucination pills – apparently distributed to them by elements of al Qaeda.

Gaddafi again denied he had shot at his people – and that his commanders have not yet decided to attack. He then warned the West against a wave of immigrants into Europe – and of piracy and armed operations by those he described as “the Islamist hardliners”.

On freezing his bank accounts and those of his close aides, Gaddafi said he was not in possession of anything but his tent. He defied the world to prove that he had owned a single dinar.

Shakespeare couldn't write this stuff.

If Bin Laden is still alive, he's gotta be hysterically laughing.

47. for over 40yrs these poor people have been ruled by this lunatic
my guess Bin Laden has been dead for many yrs.

their are similarities between #G and Bush ll with the rhetoric.

from 2011 to 2008 the US was constantly on code orange to red alert. Anytime there was a bit of descent of changing of polls. A new tape of Bin Laden would come out threatening Americans.
It would be hilarious if it didn't work for many.

Foreign Office statement on the release of the British special forces team from rebels in #Libya:

The Foreign Secretary, William Hague, said today:

"I can confirm that a small British diplomatic team has been in Benghazi. The team went to Libya to initiate contacts with the opposition. They experienced difficulties, which have now been satisfactorily resolved. They have now left Libya.

“We intend, in consultation with the opposition, to send a further team to strengthen our dialogue in due course. This diplomatic effort is part of the UK’s wider work on Libya, including our ongoing humanitarian support.

“We continue to press for Qadhafi to step down and we will work with the international community to support the legitimate ambitions of the Libyan people."

Roger Waters voices support for Israel boycott
Former Pink Floyd frontman urges fellow artists to join ban until Israel to ends the occupation, grants full equality to Israeli Arabs, and allows all Palestinian refugees to return to their homes.

Roger Waters, founding member, vocalist and bassist of the iconic rock band 'Pink Floyd' has voiced his support for a cultural boycott of Israel.

The British musician performed in Israel in 2005, ignoring calls from Palestinian rights advocates to cancel. While in Israel, Waters visited Jerusalem and Bethlehem. He was taken to the controversial separation fence in the West Bank, which he called "an appalling edifice to behold."

Waters said he was extremely affected by his tour of the West Bank, scrawling "We don’t need no thought control", lyrics from one of Pink Floyd's most popular songs, on the wall, and cancelling his performance in Tel Aviv. Instead, the British star held the concert in Neve Shalom, a cooperative village founded by Jews and Arabs.

In the letter Waters wrote announcing his support of a cultural boycott of Israel, he said that in his "view, the abhorrent and draconian control that Israel wields over the besieged Palestinians in Gaza, and the Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, coupled with its denial of the rights of refugees to return to their homes in Israel, demands that fair minded people around the world support the Palestinians in their civil, nonviolent resistance."
