Security forces in Saudi Arabia have detained at least 22 minority Shiite Muslims who protested last week over what they say is discrimination, activists said on Sunday.

Saudi security forces made 22 arrests in the town of Qatif Photo: GETTY

5:40PM GMT 06 Mar 2011
Saudi Shiites have staged small protests for about two weeks in the kingdom's east, which holds much of the oil wealth of the world's top crude exporter. "Twenty-two were arrested on Thursday plus four on Friday, so the total is 26. This was all in Qatif," said rights activist Ibrahim al-Mugaiteeb, who heads the Saudi-based independent Human Rights First Society.

A Shiite activist in the town of Qatif in the Eastern Province said he knew of 22 arrests. Interior ministry officials could not be reached for comment.

Shiite protests in Saudi Arabia started in the area of the main city town of Qatif and neighbouring Awwamiya and spread to the town of Hofuf on Friday. The demands were mainly for the release of prisoners they say are held without trial.

....

The government of Saudi Arabia, an absolute monarchy without an elected parliament that usually does not tolerate public dissent, denies these charges. The interior ministry said on Saturday demonstrations violated Islamic law and the kingdom's traditions, according to a statement on state news agency SPA.

CAIRO | Sun Mar 6, 2011 2:22pm EST

(Reuters) - Armed men in plain clothes attacked protesters demanding reform of Egypt's notoriously brutal security services outside police headquarters in Cairo on Sunday, witnesses said.

Egyptian soldiers had fired into the air for several minutes to disperse hundreds of protesters outside the police offices in central Cairo, the latest in a series of demonstrations targeting security service offices, the witnesses said.

It appeared to be the first time armed men in plain clothes had deployed in force to confront reform activists in Cairo since the toppling of President Hosni Mubarak on February 11.

Witnesses said the armed men then hurled bricks and petrol bombs, reminiscent of scenes in protests against Mubarak's rule a few weeks ago when Mubarak loyalists attacked demonstrators in central Cairo's Tahrir Square.

In the last two days, protesters have broken into 11 state security offices across the country, seizing documents and citing fears that officers would destroy them to cover up abuses perpetrated by the force.

I wonder if outside forces are involved in these attacks? And I really hope that the protesters manage to keep the documents being that someone is so desperate to get rid of them.

6. Torture, rendition, sabotage, fake terrorism like the attack on the Coptic Church
I kid you not, the protesters found all that including a room full of secret sex tapes of famous people. One title was along the lines of Kuwaiti princess with secret lover at hotel (can't remember the name of the hotel)".

There was an entire cabinet labelled Hamas.

Some key activists behind the Egyptian uprising files with photos of themselves, their families, their kids

It took the protesters 2 days to storm the building. The entire time the Secret Police was in there shredding files. I posted some pictures of the HUGE piles of shredded paper last night and the night before in these tweet threads.

Wikileaks has asked them to please save the shredded paper because they have experts who can reconstruct it.

There's a site where you can download original Arabic docs that some protesters kept but much of it, to my great regret, was turned over to the army for *safekeeping*. The Army minutely searched everyone leaving the building the night the protesters got in and confiscated all evidence they found but some still managed to get things out.

I hope along with you.

@3arabawy has a lot of information about this being a ringleader and all, his blog is http://www.arabawy.org/ but his tweets are even better.

19. The people of Egypt, who I thought this administration supported
are now 'hostile forces'? Lol, the Empire is being exposed, and it's a good thing. So far the WOT has been exposed as the scam it always was since we learned how this government was so willing to rehabilitate Qaddafi, who just before he showed a willingness to let them do business with him, was supposedly among the world's worst terrorists.

I hope all these revelations will be the beginning of restoring some sanity to this country.

I remember often being told when I objected to the FISA bill, that if I had nothing to hide, I had nothing to worry about.

I had nothing to hide, but that wasn't the point. I object to being spied on by my government.

This is an entirely different situation. The people want an end to the Dictator's brutal secret police and are entitled to view those documents to find out what crimes were committed against them.

If the U.S. was doing nothing wrong, like helping to stage terror attacks on Christians eg, not saying they did, just using that as an example, then they have nothing to worry about.

So, why is Gates there again? He certainly has long, long very questionable history of involvement in foreign affairs. I never did understand why he became SOD under this president.

3. Catherina, thank you so much for keeping us informed on this
situation.

I just discovered that we can get RT news, that is the Russian English channel and it is quite good on reporting on these issues. I can see why Hillary was so concerned about them. They are similar to AJ and seem to have good access to sources on the ground in many of the countries affected.

Hi Sabrina

I didn't want to but I laughed along with them.
How are you getting RT? Justin TV?
Do you use google chrome? If so there's an application out there that opens up a lot of channels very easily.
These days I'm glued to Al Jazeera but they seem to be toning their reports down lately.

Thanks for dropping in. I like reading your stuff.

23. I was flipping through the channels way up in the 200s
searching for some kind of news other than CNN and MSNBC and the rest of the U.S. media which go on vacation every weekend, and I thought we might get the BBC as we used to do.

I landed on this channel which caught my interest as it was reporting on up to date news from Libya. So I watched for a while and saw some great interviews regarding the Information War Hillary was talking about. Interviews with people like U.S. Media experts as well as others. And then the anchor mentioned that RT had been mentioned by Clinton also and I realized it was the Russian English channel.

We have Time Warner so anyone who has that may be able to get RT. It really is good and reporting up to date news even on the weekend.

I do use Google Chrome. Didn't know about that feature though so I will check it out.

The RT news channel aired a great documentary last night on the use of car bombs by insurgents over the past 30 years or so. Very impartial imo and very thought-provoking. So it looks like they also do documentaries which I will look for.

Ah, and (Iranian English) PressTV: http://www.presstv.ir/#

Both available for free on the net, as is Al J English. 'Western' media, of course, tends to want to make you, as well as putting up with all their advertising attempting to sell you consumer crap you really don't need, along with the rest of the propaganda, PAY TO VIEW (adding injury to insult - and what's more letting them easily know who you are), so I don't.

I don't otherwise have TV in the house, just DVD.

Of course, you need to know where all these emitters are coming from, so you notice when their knickers are showing - what they spin and hide.

31. Thanks, I found it on our Time Warner cable lineup.
I don't know why I didn't discover it before. Maybe it's new. I don't remember too many ads either. They did a good segment on the 'information wars' last night, and had Danny Schechter on among others, who pointed out that Hillary's concerns reflected the destruction of the U.S. news media after it became Corporatized.

Several guests, mostly American and British I believe, commented on how the U.S. media is now all opinion with the focus on attacking political figures rather than on real news. They showed clips from Faux and MSNBC. It was sad to watch really. We do not get news, that is clear.

But Hillary is not asking for real news, she is asking for funds to 'better deliver OUR MESSAGE to the world'. And she views Al Jazeera and RT news as 'winning the information war' but doesn't seem to understand why. They are delibering real news! And people are tired of the canned, propaganda and the zenophobic cheering for war and the fear-mongering about terror.

They did show Hillary's speech asking for funds and she appeared to be pretty desperate.

64. There's more than one,
and evidently it means "well", or "water tank". So there's a fierce battle at the gate of the water tank.

Seriously though, I've moused all over for a Libyan geography/list of place names/list of place name/Arabic to English variants - and I'm convinced there just isn't one.

UN humanitarian chief demands urgent access to Libyan city of Misrata
6 MARCH 2011 24 VIEWS NO COMMENT BY: BNO NEWS

NEW YORK (BNO NEWS) -- A top United Nations relief official on Sunday called for urgent humanitarian access to Misrata in western Libya following reports of violence and killings in the area.

"Humanitarian organizations need urgent access now. People are injured and dying and need help immediately," said Valerie Amos. "I call on the authorities to provide access without delay to allow aid workers to help save lives."

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said it has received reports that Misrata is under attack by Government forces and that the Libyan Red Crescent is trying to get ambulances in from the capital, Tripoli, to collect the dead and injured.

Amos, the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, traveled to the Tunisia-Libya border on Saturday to review the ongoing relief effort for people fleeing Libya amid the recent violence.
