22 dogs in shelter taken across street, shot, buried in landfill
Edited on Sun Mar-06-11 09:21 PM by The Straight Story
CHESTERFIELD (SC)-- Representatives from animal rescue groups, news media and concerned community members gathered in front of the Chesterfield County Animal Shelter, Sat. March 5 for a press conference held to address news that dogs from the shelter were being shot and buried in a nearby field.

With the gates to the shelter shut and a sign reading “closed to the public,” Whitney Knowlton, CEO of of Last Chance Animal Rescue, spoke to the crowd about the shocking discovery made Friday by shelter volunteers. No representatives from the Chesterfield County Sheriff's Department or the animal control division were present for the event.

On Friday morning, Deborah Farhi, a rescue worker and shelter volunteer, visited the facility and became concerned after she noticed that several dogs were missing. She asked an inmate working at the facility what had happened to the dogs, and according to Farhi, was told that approximately 22 of the sheltered animals had been walked across the street, shot and buried in the landfill.

According to Farhi, after hearing this, she and two other volunteers grabbed shovels and went to the landfill to dig for remains, in search of the truth. After digging the volunteers found the remains of two dogs and took pictures, later uploaded to the internet, as evidence of what they found. One of the photos showed a dog half buried with what appeared to be blood around it's ear. Another showed a bullet casing found on the ground by the grave site.

4. It is almost as if the absence of sympathy for these living
creatures helps feed these people. It makes me physically sick thinking of the final minutes of these dog's lives.

6. Welcome to the truth in euthanization of animals in many parts of America.
This article should be mandatory reading for the masses of cretins that chide PETA for the euthanasia of dogs/cats they take in from rural shelters with little means.

Some places use a (hopefully) well placed bullet, some a gas chamber. Neither are pretty, neither are humane.

If this outrages you, then please spay/neuter your pets and don't breed or buy while homeless animals die, or you're in a way responsible for it.

7. This is what happens when state and local services get slashed
to the bone.

There isn't the money for euthanasia injections, so they use the means available to them.

10. Gas chambers are cheap, NC loves to use them
It is not about money, it is about not caring a bit about the animals. Many shelters have good wardens who try to get these southern dogs out to northern rescues, but many, like in Gaston County, NC, LOVE to kill.

9. This happens in the south every day
I do dog rescue and have heard about things like this for 3 years. I pull dogs from high kill shelters in NC, SC and Georgia, bring them to NY and find homes for them: many shelters in SC kill the puppies people bring in, and they kill them right away because they are owner surrenders. Many people don't believe in spay/neuter, and have an attitude that dogs' lives don't count.

Now, we have some people with this attitude in the northeast, but it is much less prevalent, and there are many more people who love animals, so they have made big changes up here in the last 40 years. The south - I pray that this stops someday. It has broken my heart over and over and over.

11. It is simply sad that this is how it is
You would think if we can land robots on mars, invent all the things we humans do, we could find a way to solve issues like this without death being involved.
