Kadafi regime reports success but rebels say they still hold Zawiya, Misurata

Government attacks on Zawiya and Misurata continue to kill scores of civilians, but witnesses report that the rebels are holding their ground using light guns, Molotov cocktails and knives.

By Borzou Daragahi and Garrett Therolf, Los Angeles Times

March 7, 2011

Reporting from Tripoli, Libya, and Cairo — Libyan strongman Moammar Kadafi renewed attacks against strategic cities near the capital Sunday, and though his deputies insisted they were overwhelmingly successful, the reality appeared to be very different.

Attacks by tanks, guns and helicopters on Zawiya and Misurata continued to kill scores of civilians, but witnesses widely reported that the cities were retained by rebels at the end of the day.

...

"They brought tanks inside the city < Misurata > and found themselves trapped," the 60-year-old architect said. "All you need is light guns and Molotov cocktails to defeat them. People jumped inside the tanks and killed the people inside with knives."

Ali Zeidan, an official with the opposition movement, said the city about 120 miles east of Tripoli, the capital, "is still under the control of the people. The people used very primitive things — dynamite, anything — but they worked."

They sit crammed together in trucks headed to war in the desert, thousands of rebels throwing themselves into battle against Colonel Moammar Gadhafi. They stand united in their hatred of his regime.

Three weeks ago, however, these men lived different lives. They wore hard hats, not military berets; they carried hammers, not assault rifles. Their bands of fighters consist mostly of amateurs, facing off against professional forces.

In its first public appearance this weekend, the newly formed rebel council in Benghazi promised it would send more seasoned reinforcements from the ranks of defecting troops.

In the meantime, however, the ragtag warriors on the front lines say their passion keeps them going. For many, the wellspring of emotion is their bitter personal history.

US under pressure to arm Libya rebels

THE administration of US President Barack Obama has come under mounting pressure to arm rebels facing an emboldened and regrouping military, amid charges Washington missed recent chances to oust Libya's strongman.

Mr Obama has insisted that all options, including military action, remain on the table with respect to Libya, where Muammar Gaddafi's forces have unleashed deadly airstrikes on rebels and civilians in efforts to crush an uprising in which thousands are feared dead.

...

Stephen Hadley, national security adviser to Obama's predecessor George W. Bush, said Washington should look at the potential for funnelling arms to Gaddafi's opponents.

Obviously, if there is a way to get weapons into the hands of the rebels, if we can get anti-aircraft systems so that they can enforce a no-fly zone over their own territory, that would be helpful," Mr Hadley told CNN.

10. A military analysis by Thom Shanker in the NYT explores U.S. options
Military Analysis
U.S. Weighs Options, on Air and Sea

By THOM SHANKER
Published: March 6, 2011

WASHINGTON — American military planners are sifting through a range of options as the United States, like other Western nations, weighs the response to the bloody Libyan military assaults on rebels trying to oust Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi.

Rebel commanders have begged for American strikes on troops and weapons that have turned on civilians and assaulted strongholds of the resistance. And on Sunday, three influential members of the United States Senate, from both parties, renewed the call for a no-flight zone to ground the Libyan Air Force and prevent it from attacking its people. They also pressed the Obama administration for a more aggressive response, including supplying intelligence, arms and training to the rebels.

The defense secretary, Robert M. Gates, and top commanders have warned of political fallout if America again attacks a Muslim nation, even to support a popular revolt. So military planners on the Pentagon’s Joint Staff and in its field commands are offering a broad range of approaches, depending on how events play out in Libya and how tough the United States and its allies want to be.

Even without firing a shot, a relatively passive operation using signal-jamming aircraft in international airspace could muddle Libyan government communications with military units. Administration officials said Sunday that preparations for such an operation were under way.

More plus a good interactive map of how the rebellion is unfolding, day by day:

America's secret plan to arm Libya's rebels
Obama asks Saudis to airlift weapons into Benghazi

By Robert Fisk, Middle East Correspondent
Monday, 7 March 2011

Desperate to avoid US military involvement in Libya in the event of a prolonged struggle between the Gaddafi regime and its opponents, the Americans have asked Saudi Arabia if it can supply weapons to the rebels in Benghazi. The Saudi Kingdom, already facing a "day of rage" from its 10 per cent Shia Muslim community on Friday, with a ban on all demonstrations, has so far failed to respond to Washington's highly classified request, although King Abdullah personally loathes the Libyan leader, who tried to assassinate him just over a year ago.

Washington's request is in line with other US military co-operation with the Saudis. The royal family in Jeddah, which was deeply involved in the Contra scandal during the Reagan administration, gave immediate support to American efforts to arm guerrillas fighting the Soviet army in Afghanistan in 1980 and later – to America's chagrin – also funded and armed the Taliban.

But the Saudis remain the only US Arab ally strategically placed and capable of furnishing weapons to the guerrillas of Libya. Their assistance would allow Washington to disclaim any military involvement in the supply chain – even though the arms would be American and paid for by the Saudis.

The Saudis have been told that opponents of Gaddafi need anti-tank rockets and mortars as a first priority to hold off attacks by Gaddafi's armour, and ground-to-air missiles to shoot down his fighter-bombers.

Intensive diplomatic consultations are ongoing between the Netherlands and Libya following the capture of three Dutch marines in Sirte on February 27.

The Marines landed their helicopter on the beach of Sirte in an attempt to evacuate two employees of the Dutch consulate in Libya. The Libyan army subsequently arrested them.

The evacuees were transferred to the Dutch embassy shortly after the incident, but the marines remain in Libyan custody. Gaddafi has referred to them as ‘prisoners’.

“We are doing everything we can. Due to the sensitivity of the matter we cannot say when we had our last contact with the Libyans,” a spokesperson of the Dutch defence ministry told Al Jazeera.

RAS LANUF, Libya, March 7 (Reuters)

"I went to Bin Jawad and about 20 km (13 miles) beforehand I saw Gaddafi forces, a large truck and army vehicles, and a fighter jet, they were coming slowly in this direction," Ahmed al-Araibi, a driver, told Reuters.

"I saw army trucks ahead, I was about 20 km away (from Bin Jawad)," said Khalifa Saad, another driver. While another witness said there were several trucks heading to Ras Lanuf.

A BBC reporter also showed Reuters footage from Sunday of a truck and warplane near Bin Jawad, heading towards Ras Lanuf. (Reporting by Mohammed Abbas; Writing by Edmund Blair in Cairo)

In the rebel stronghold of Benghazi, much of the euphoria and excitement that victory was close at hand had faded, said Al Jazeera's Hoda Abdel-Hamid.

Some feared that pro-Gaddafi forces had deliberately retreated to around Gaddafi's Sirte, drawing the inexperienced and poorly-equipped rebel fighters forward and leaving rebel-held towns exposed to a possible counter-offensive.

"Some people told me all the young people had gone to the front. There is no one left to protect the city," said Abdel-Hamid. "There is an understanding that is not going to happen so easily."

Lots of very weird "static" coming from #Libya since yesterday, I'll have to say haven't seen this level/type since the start of events...
3 hours ago Favorite Retweet Reply

The "static" as it may is this time focused around: yesterday's gun battle in Tripoli, events around Sirt, and Abdallah Senussi... #Libya

I'm wondering whether to share what I'm getting, or to hold off until I can confirm it or the credibility of its sources... #Libya

I think I'll err on the side of caution and try to confirm the details, but I'll tell you the broad idea (with an "unconfirmed" stamp)...

First of all there are news about opposition movements. I have pledged never to release such info until they do, so, there.

Otherwise there's report (mark it as "rumor") that yesterday's gun battles in Tripoli were due to an attempt on "the leader's" life.

Also reports of in-fighting, more speculation about the disappearance of Abdullah Senussi, and reports out of Sirt. All unconfirmed.

That's all I'll say about this till at least the evening (i.e. 5-6 hours from now) when I get more. #Libya

About the Sirt area, please don't be bummed by news about Bin Jawad "falling" to Gaddafi. I think it's a mis-characterization.

Bin Jawad isn't (and never was) a strategic town. The revolutionaries pulled out of it to consolidate at Ras Lanuf. #Libya

Bin Jawad is more a way point than a strategic point. When revolutionaries pulled back some of them had even reached Sirt outskirts.

The truly strategic point is Wadi-al-Hamra, that's a pinch point, and that's the true place to look for. #Libya

The revolutionaries said: "Our target was always Wadi-al-Hamra. If we're past that, we're in Sirt." Bin Jawad is just a waypoint.#Libya

In fact some of the revolutionary fighters said that they don't even need to enter Bin Jawad; but cannot circumvent Wadi-al-Hamra.

Wadi-al-Ahmar or Wadi-al-Hamra literally means "the red valley", it's a little over 100 kms from Sirt (to the east of course). #Libya

Aljazeera live from Ras Lanuf: City is under attack by Grad missiles

Reports that Gaddafi put a hit on Aljazeera's crew in Ras Lanuf.

Aljazeera's reporter in Benghazi says he fears there may be attempts on Aljazeera's crew in #Libya by #Gaddafi agents.

I expect Gaddafi to go after Ras Lanuf like a freight train, he's gonna hit it like a ton of bricks... hope they hold their ground.

Aljazeera reports air strikes on Ras Lanuf now. #Libya

42. That enigmatic tweet from yesterday
referring to a fierce battle between the rebels and mercenaries near the gate of Bir Ait might make sense now. As I said "Bir Ait" means water tank, but what I didn't speculate on at the time was that the only meaningful (as in "worthy of fighting and tweeting about") water tanks in the area are at the SE edge of Sirt.

So the line "When revolutionaries pulled back some of them had even reached Sirt outskirts" does make the puzzle piece fit, and after all, a small fast scouting team could have driven there in less than two hours.

Under unprecedented fire from tanks, artillery, military jets, and helicopter, opposition forces, armed with light arms and some air defense weaponry, had to withdraw from Bin Jawad. Some of them describe what happened in the city as "actual horror".

Reports said pro-Gaddafi forces were hiding inside residential homes and attacking opposition forces as well as civilians from there.

UPDATE 1-Western states need Libyan partnership--Gaddafi
Mon Mar 7, 2011 11:05am GMT

ALGIERS, March 7 (Reuters) - Libya is an important partner for the West in containing al Qaeda and illegal migrants trying to reach Europe, Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi said on Monday, in an apparent warning to governments planning sanctions.

"Libya plays a vital role in regional peace and world peace," he said in an interview with the France 24 television station. "We are an important partner in fighting al Qaeda."

"There are millions of blacks who could come to the Mediterranean to cross to France and Italy, and Libya plays a role in security in the Mediterranean," he said, speaking through an interpreter.

Western governments have condemned Gaddafi for the killings of hundreds of people since protests against his rule broke out last month. Several foreign leaders have demanded sanctions and an end to his four decades in power.

13:25 BBC Ahmed Seweli, a Libyan psychiatrist who left his job in England to help in Libya says that hospitals in Misrata are desperately lacking in equipment and medication. He also adds that getting supplies and personnel in through the border is proving very difficult. Gaddafi’s men are not letting medical supplies through, he says.

13:25 BBC According to a spokesperson in Misrata, the battle there had lasted for 8 hours. “Seven tanks entered the city supported by about 25 vehicle-mounted machine guns. Three of the tanks made their way all the way to the town centre, where they were trapped in one of the squares and there was really heavy fighting. There was carnage and destruction.”

Gaddafi insists al Qaeda is to blame for chaos and killings

VIDEO

...

“There have been at most 150 to 200 people killed. People should come here and see how many people have been killed. They can come and check among the population, and among the police and the army,” a seemingly collected Gaddafi explained.

Dressed in a long tunic and matching brown headscarf, Gaddafi insisted that international media reports were overlooking the broad support his government enjoys and were misleading people about the events in the country.

At times he appeared to harbour resentment for the criticism and sanction from international leaders. “Libya has very good relations with the United States, with the European Union and with African countries, and Libya plays a crucial role in regional and world peace,” Gaddafi told FRANCE 24.

In characteristic fashion Gaddafi sprinkled odd comparisons in his responses. He likened the clampdown on dissidents to what he called Israel’s crackdown of al Qaeda terrorists in the Gaza Strip.

We need an international dismantling of the arms industry and an end to wars our various governments are waging. Now. Seriously NOW.

56. One commenter claims this is from near Sabha
"Analyzing this video: Location is readable: Ubari Airport in Awbari, near Sabha, South-West Libya"

Ubari is actually about 110 miles SW of Sabha, but otherwise I wouldn't disagree. Curious thing that the international community can mull over a NFZ, but it seems unthinkable for them to impose a no-mercenaries zone. I suppose one must not interfere with free enterprise.

2:02pm
Abdel Basset Abu Zouriq, a spokesperson of the opposition, told Al Jazeera on Monday that Misurata was still under control of opposition forces.

Pro-Gaddafi forces are still somewhere outside the city, regrouping for future attacks.

He said that the city was anti-Gaddafi in general and so government forces could only attack the city or invade it for few hours and then withdraw.

AP: Libyan warplanes strike rebels at oil port

Libyan warplanes strike rebels at oil port

By PAUL SCHEMM, Associated Press – 40 mins ago

RAS LANOUF, Libya – Libyan warplanes launched fresh airstrikes on rebel positions around a key oil port Monday, trying to block the opposition fighters from advancing toward Moammar Gadhafi's stronghold in the capital, Tripoli.

Rebels in the area said they can take on Gadhafi's elite ground forces, but are outgunned if he uses his air power.

"We don't want a foreign military intervention, but we do want a no-fly zone," said rebel fighter Ali Suleiman. He added that the rebels can take on "the rockets and the tanks, but not Gadhafi's air force."

Libya appears to be sliding toward a civil war that could drag out for weeks, or even months, as rebels try to oust Gadhafi after 41 years. Resorting to heavy use of air attacks signaled the regime's concern that it needed to check the advance of the rebel force toward Sirte — Gadhafi's hometown and stronghold.
