25. Related but from Tunisia
1.17pm: More than 1,000 illegal immigrants escaping political turmoil in north Africa arrived on the southern Italian island of Lampedusa in the Mediterranean on Sunday night, Reuters reports.

Taking advantage of good weather, the immigrants, most of them from Tunisia, arrived in more than 10 boats. Some of the boats made it to the shores on their own, others were intercepted by the coastguard and their passengers taken off. None were believed to have left from Libya, but officials fear an exodus from Italy's former colony if the situation worsens.

From Lampedusa immigrants are sent by plane to holding centres on the mainland but the backlog is beginning to grow.

Interior minister Roberto Maroni said last week an aid mission to Tunisia to provide food and medical help was aimed at handling the refugee situation in north Africa but it was already preparing for a potential surge of immigrants to Italy.

More than 7,000 people from Tunisia have arrived in Italy since Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali was ousted as president in mid-January.

Protest Organizers Ordered to Shut Offices in Iraq
By MICHAEL S. SCHMIDT and JACK HEALY
Published: March 7, 2011

BAGHDAD — Two political parties that led demonstrations in Baghdad over the past two weeks said on Monday that security forces controlled by Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki had ordered them to close their offices.

The actions came amid growing concerns that Mr. Maliki, who is backed by the United States, is using force and other measures to stifle this country’s democracy.

Officials for the Iraqi Nation Party and the Iraqi Communist Party said in interviews that dozens of armed security forces had come to their offices in Baghdad on Sunday, two days after nationwide protests calling for better services.

...

“This is part of the violations of public freedoms and human rights,” said Hanaa Edwar, an activist with the civil society group Al-Amal. “They feel that these demonstrators are terrorists. Political parties not loyal to their policies are being attacked. And for what?”

1.43pm: More information on reports of Libyan aircraft launching fresh strikes on rebel positions around Ras Lanuf from Associated Press, where anti-Gaddafi forces are calling for the west to impose a no-fly zone.

Rebels in the area said they can take on Gaddafi's elite ground forces, but are outgunned if he uses his air power.
"We don't want a foreign military intervention, but we do want a no-fly zone," said rebel fighter Ali Suleiman. He added that the rebels can take on "the rockets and the tanks, but not Gadhafi's air force."

Libya plane hits town, over one million need

VIDEO:

By Mohammed Abbas
RAS LANUF, Libya | Mon Mar 7, 2011 9:36am EST

(Reuters) - Government forces seeking to dislodge rebels from Libya's strategically important coast struck at an oil town on Monday amid quickening efforts to prevent more humanitarian suffering and a mass refugee exodus.

The United Nations said more than one million people fleeing Libya and inside the country needed humanitarian aid, and conditions in rebel-held Misrata town were particularly worrying following attacks on it by forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi.

Offering a potential olive branch to rebels seeking to end Gaddafi's long rule, one of his associates appealed to opposition chiefs for dialogue, in a sign the aging autocrat may be ready to compromise with the unprecedented revolt.

The offer, rapidly dismissed by rebels, coincided with a renewed publicity drive by Gaddafi that warned European nations to the north of the Mediterranean that if he fell "you will have immigration, thousands of people from Libya will invade Europe."

Rebel Advance in Libya Set Back by Heavy Assault

Libyan rebel fighters took cover after a bomb was dropped by a fighter jet near a checkpoint on the outskirts of the oil town of Ras Lanuf on Monday. More Photos »

AL UQAYLAH, Libya — With tanks, helicopters and fighter planes, troops loyal to Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi attacked rebel troops in the coastal town of Bin Jawwad on Sunday and pushed them east, stalling, for the moment, hopes by the antigovernment fighters of a steady march toward Tripoli.

LIVE- Libyan Unrest: Spokesman for Libyan Doctors Relief, says Libyan authorities prevent doctors/supplies into #Libya http://bit.ly/g8z3wW

4:14: Dr Ahmed Sewehli, a spokesman for Libyan Doctors Relief, has told the BBC that the Libyan authorities are not allowing doctors and medical supplies over the western border with Tunisia. “It is quite bewildering. (Col Gaddafi) is not allowing his own people to be treated for the injuries that of course he and his regime have been causing,” he add

4:11: Baroness Amos also told the BBC that getting help to rebel-held areas which had come under attack by government forces was essential: “You would normally have a situation where the Libyan Red Crescent would get access and where we could support them with a flow of supplies. To have the Benghazi Red Crescent and the Libyan Red Crescent ringing us up and saying: ‘We can’t get in, we urgently need you to call for access,’ is unprecedented.

4:06: Up to a million foreign workers and others trapped in Libya are expected to need emergency aid because of fighting in the country, the UN has said. Emergency Relief Co-ordinator Valerie Amos said the UN needed $160m to pay for camp co-ordination and management, food security, nutrition, health care, water, sanitation and hygiene for the next three months. “This appeal is based on a planning scenario projecting up to 400,000 people leaving Libya – including the 200,000 who have left to date – and another 600,000 people inside Libya expected to need humanitarian aid,” she said.

44. Reuters: EU to add Libya investment body to embargo -diplomats
UPDATE 1-EU to add Libya investment body to embargo -diplomats

Mon Mar 7, 2011 10:10am EST

* Sanctions could be agreed as soon as Tuesday

* Libyan Investment Authority has broad EU investments

* Holdings include stakes in Italy's UniCredit, Finmeccanica

(Adds details, quote)

BRUSSELS, March 7 (Reuters) - European Union member states are set to extend sanctions imposed on Libya to include the Libyan Investment Authority, a $70 billion sovereign wealth fund with major European investments, diplomats said on Monday.

If none of the EU's 27 member states voices an objection, the Libyan investment body will automatically be added to the embargoed list from around midday on Tuesday, as will several other Libyan financial organisations, the diplomats said.

"The Libyan Investment Authority is on a new list of Libyan entities being targeted by the sanctions," one of the diplomats told Reuters. Another said that "a handful" of other Libyan financial entities would be added at the same time.

It was not immediately clear what impact the sanctions would have on the LIA, but sources said it would likely mean its investments in any EU member state would be frozen.

Professors Paid by Qaddafi: Providing 'Positive Public Relations'
Jon Wiener
March 5, 2011

Joseph Nye of Harvard’s Kennedy School wrote in The New Republic in 2007 that Muammar Qaddafi was interested in discussing “direct democracy.”

Anthony Giddens of the London School of Economics wrote in the Guardian the same year that Libya under Qaddafi could become “the Norway of North Africa.”

Benjamin Barber of Rutgers University wrote in the Washington Post, also in 2007, that Libya under Qaddafi could become “the first Arab state to transition peacefully and without overt Western intervention to a stable, non-autocratic government.”

Great minds think alike? Actually, no: all were being paid by Libyan money, under a $3 million per year contract with a consulting group which promised to “enhance the profile of Libya and Muammar Quadhafi” in Britain and the US.

@ShababLibya I totally agree with you. Disappointed with Simpson. Plus some of the reporting may give the Gaddafi thugs info + intelligence

We are pleased with the coverage of the BBC in general but we strongly urge you to limit information coming from this area #Libya #Feb17

Phrases used such as chaos or running back down the road, are not helpful, these can play into hands of pro gaddafi morale #Libya #Feb17

4:50: Political activist Abdul Jabbar al-Zawi, who is in Zawiya, tells al-Jazeera: “Gaddafi brigades launched the most violent attack ever on the city today. The attack began with artillery shelling of the buildings overlooking Martyrs Square. The tanks entered the square and bombarded the surrounding area.”

“The bombardment is still ongoing, yet the youths have returned to the square and regained control of it. The youths are still in control of the city of Zawiya.”

4:45: Al-Jazeera is also now reporting that there have been renewed clashes in the western Libyan city of Zawiya. Pro-Gaddafi security brigades are bombarding the city from the east and west, and plumes of smoke are rising from the main square, it says
