We would have kept it quiet and listened to them, and discussed with them whatever they wanted. But the way they came, it was quite suspicious, and the council took the position that we really don’t want to discuss anything with this particular team.”

3. Ras Lanuf: one man died, 2children injured severely, 1 child killed

7:37pm: At least one person is thought to have died after a pick-up truck carrying a family was hit by in an airstrike in the eastern Libyan oil town of Ras Lanuf. Witnesses said one man had died and two children had been injured severely. One witness said a child had been killed. “The inside of the car and parts of the outside are splattered with blood, and children’s shoes are scattered inside,” said Reuters correspondent Mohammed Abbas. “All the windows are blown out.”

7:48pm: The major Libyan oil ports of Ras Lanuf and Brega are closed, shipping sources have told the Reuters news agency. The last oil tanker left Ras Lanuf on Monday, they added. Both towns have seen major clashes between pro- and anti-government forces in recent days. However, another shipping source said the eastern port of Tobruk was operational.

7:55pm: Libyan TV has highlighted what it said were remarks made by South African President Jacob Zuma in a phone conversation with Col Gaddafi, BBC Monitoring reports. It quoted Mr Zuma as calling on the African Union to “take decisive action and uncover the conspiracy that Libyan is facing”. It also quoted him as “stressing the need not to depend on tendentious reports circulated by foreign media outlets” and the need to listen to the Libyan media in this regard.

Political pressure is growing on Barack Obama to administer a coup de grace to Colonel Gaddafi, if need be through direct US military intervention. In part it's because policymakers and commentators see a chance of a fresh, democratic start in Libya, and in part because they fear a vacuum that anti-western Islamists and al-Qaida may fill. But Washington's war drums are also beating faster out of concern that Gaddafi, a long-reviled bogeyman first targeted by Ronald Reagan, may yet survive the revolt.

John McCain, the 2008 Republican presidential candidate, is leading the charge – coincidentally providing a salutary insight into how America might act now had he and Sarah Palin not been defeated by Obama. McCain is urging the White House to declare its support for a Libyan provisional government, even though none presently exists, and provide "technical assistance", training and intelligence to rebel forces.

Undeterred by Pentagon chief Robert Gates's warning that a no-fly zone (NFZ), as proposed by David Cameron, would be tantamount to declaring war, McCain said imposing a NFZ would not be difficult and would show "the president is serious when he says we need for Gaddafi to go". The Republican senate leader, Mitch McConnell, is arguing (again like Cameron) that supplying weapons to the rebels "could be an option". Stephen Hadley, former president George Bush's national security adviser, suggested immediate aerial arms drops.

Democrat John Kerry has also jumped in, even though, given his long experience on the senate foreign affairs committee, he should know better by now. Apparently oblivious to Britain's SAS disastrous weekend adventure in eastern Libya, Kerry said bombing Libya's military air bases, runways and airports could be effective in containing Gaddafi's air power. He claimed a NFZ would not amount to military intervention. But he added it should only be undertaken with international agreement.

intentionally misreporting is a tactic of the regime

Remember that sensational claims and crazy calls have been used by the regime in the past to cast doubts on media and harm reputation #libya

Take a look at @NicRobertsonCNN tweets. It's not as bad as the other ones that were tweeted. He's been there recently.

The caller might not be a propagandist, but someone who's terrified or traumatized. Tends to alter perception of severity.

This video report by Alex Crawford, a correspondent for Britain's Sky News who is in Zawiya, a rebel-held town just 30 miles west of Tripoli, shows the aftermath of fierce fighting there on Sunday (please be aware that the report includes graphic images):

Ms. Crawford also filed a report from Zawiya for The Telegraph on Monday, which began:

The town of Zawiya was like Grozny from the Chechnya war on Saturday morning. There were great holes in the sides of buildings, and smashed-in walls down the roads leading in to the town. There were broken lampposts, and total devastation.

For two days we have watched as tanks have come down these roads, firing shells at the buildings, apartments and houses included. But in the centre of town, in the square, the hard-core opposition people are still there and still in control, despite three attacks by columns of tanks.

We arrived in the town on Friday, just as 10,000 people were marching towards the eastern checkpoint on the road to Tripoli, the army's front-line, in mourning for a commander who was shot by a sniper overnight.

As they reached the checkpoint, the army opened fire, and the crowd turned and ran.

My notes:
Battle lasted ~3 hrs. Revos captured heavy equipment incl weapons, tank, Anti-Aircraft weapons. Captured about 14 soldiers incl a Colonel who'd been hit in the chest. Are currently interrogating the prisoners...

20 from Bn killed. 1 revolutionary killed.

Bn did a full retreat & is about 80kms away from Zintan. Current situation- number of planes above the city. No bombing.
