Who here remembers "Media Whores Online"?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_Whores_Online

I LIVED on what they did every day.

Never learned who they were.

Was that mystery ever solved?

Anyhoo...a toast to MWO. They kept me sane.

Sort of, anyway. ;)

25. Used to read "The Horse" daily
I remember the flashing lights for breaking news (Drudge stole that idea) and the biting, literate commentary.

Those were the days. The proto-DKos, Bartcop, Atrios, Smirking Chimp, Buzzflash and some little upstart website that did the "Top 10 Conservative Idiots".

Didn't the editor call himself 'Diogenes'?

32. I used to love BartCop
But, he lost me in the 2008 primaries. I understand his attachment to the Clintons, as I had read his page from nearly Day 1 back during the impeachment. But, I felt he went too far with the anti-Obama rhetoric during the 2008 primaries. It really turned me off. I stopped reading Firedoglake for the same reason. Neither one of those two remaining candidates were my first choice, so I really didn't like all of the infighting.

until Marc whatzisname decided he was way too important ... now I rarely visit that site

there are those occasional upstart places - but the ones that tend to resonate with me will always be the forever loading huppi site - the original Lying Socialist Weasel - I am a member - but only by the grace of others who really knew Kangas ... I was a few years too late - that will always be one of my reasons for sadness - ahhhh ... but I share too much once again

here's a great site - still there - always relevant

THE LONG FAQ ON LIBERALISM

and with that, I bid you - best wishes

30. Oh yeah
My understanding is that the person behind it was female, and was a political operative of some kind - staff member, press agent, attorney, something. Anyway, she apparently got her wagon hitched to the right star and became a highly placed political operative, and running the MWO site was no longer safe should she lose her anonymity.

Yes, the site was wonderful for the latest tidbits, inside information, and exposure of some of the worst excesses and log-rolling in the popular media. And that endorsement has nothing (NOTHING, I tell you!) with MWO's incredibly fine judgment in running an item or two authored by some guy with a modem who went by the handle gratuitous.

That site was like a lifeline to the sane. The way "Dear Horse" became the salutation for letters to the site was really perfect. That person could have been a big player now in the Web era if they had just been able to stick with it.

Really vivid memories.

42. The shut down was a real blow to organizing all of us...
by giving us not only the targets, but the ways to go after the scumbags...urls, emails, and phone numbers.

Sorely missed. Bartcop made an offer to buy the site but was turned down. No reason for the shutdown was ever given.

Being able to go after the specific targets must have made those in power very nervous.

In a strange way that's what gave that site credibility.

According to Bartcop, Horse was a female and I had a friendly email exchange circa 2001. Using those clues, I've always thought Digby fit best.

62. Well...there's "WikiLeaks" ...now. Took a long bit of time, though.
As I remember it, MWO's was very worried about folks finding out who they were in their last days.

A DU poster, above thread, thinks they had lack of money and begging in the last days. That's not my recollection. But, I guess folks can differ. In those days most sites as new as they were weren't begging for money.

Whatever...they are truly missed. I always figured they were high enough power that they just were in close danger of being exposed and they just didn't want it to happen. So, they had to cut out. But, at that time there were new sites popping up...and maybe they figured those sites would carry out their message and mission...and it just wasn't it worth it for them to keep it up.
